O'Neill replacement sought by Barclays
O'Neill, the former head of BankAmerica, resigned from his new post after just one day in the job because of ill health. He was advised by doctors not to stay in the job after a recent serious bout of flu triggered a heart condition. Barclays' deputy chairman Sir Peter Middleton will be acting chief executive until a suitable replacement can be found. O'Neill, 52, has returned to the US, where he is expected to retire.
