Citadel hires former BAML strat with eye-opening educational background
Known for bringing on highly educated people and finding them a role, hedge fund giant Citadel is at it again with the hiring Dr. Andrew Lim, a former managing director and core strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch who spent 15 years padding his education background before entering finance.
Lim has his bachelor’s degree in physics and his PhD in mathematics from the University of Manchester in the U.K. He completed a postdoctoral in molecular physics and astrochemistry at University College London and later had his research funded by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), according to his LinkedIn profile. After taking another postdoctoral position in astrophysical fluid dynamics at University of Leeds in 2004, Lim received the prestigious Schrödinger fellowship, for which he spent the following five years conducting research in computational astrophysics.
It wasn’t until 2010 when he joined J.P. Morgan in the analytic strategies group as an associate. Lim moved to BAML in 2013 and was named a managing director in 2018. Now he’s an MD at Citadel. The firm declined to comment. Lim didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Judging by a few recent hires, Citadel and other businesses owned by founder Ken Griffin seem rather keen on bringing in new recruits with extensive and eclectic post-graduate degrees. The strategy seems to be working. Citadel’s flagship funds gained 13.6% during the first six months of 2019, well above the average for similar multi-strategy hedge funds, according to Bloomberg.
