Never has it been more important to work for a top tier investment bank. Analysts at Oliver Wyman and Morgan Stanley point out that margins are much higher for market leaders in particular sectors and for particular products. Higher margins equate to higher job security and to higher pay.
But which banks are top tier? How do you know that the bank you're joining (or already working for) is genuinely a market leader in your product area? Look at the charts below.
Using data from Coalition, Thomson Reuters and Dealogic, we've assembled charts on the top three investment banks by region, product and sector. There are some surprises (for example, UBS is no longer a big deal in cash equities) and there are some inevitabilities (the top three investment banks in most sectors and regions are from the U.S.).
Some banks are notably absent. RBS is nowhere. Nor is BNP Paribas. Credit Suisse is top tier in securitized product trading and that's about all.
