Who's hiring now? Try these 10 senior bankers who've just got new jobs
Want a new job in banking? You could always apply for jobs along with everyone else, or you could wait for the jobs to come to you, or you could proactively approach named individuals who are hiring in your area of expertise.
If you want to take the proactive approach, we suggested a few names of people who might be in a position to offer you employment at Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan a couple of months ago. Thanks to the latest comprehensive market round-up from search firm Veni Partners, we can now supplement that list with selected names below. These senior bankers have switched into new jobs since January according to Veni. They're either in growth areas or at growth firms, and we suggest they might be hiring soon.
1. Jan–Erik Back at BTG Pactual
Jan-Erik has joined BTG as head of commodities investments. BTG reportedly wants to hire 100 commodities professionals in London. Now may be the time to send Jan-Erik your CV.
2. Franz Bucher at Cantor Fitzgerald
Cantor Fitzgerald has hired Franz Bucher as MD in high yield and distressed debt. European distressed debt is a big growth area. We'd suggest Franz might want to hire, although we have no confirmation of this.
3. Muhammed Yesilhark at Carmignac Gestion
European asset management company Carmignac Gestion has been vacuuming up staff from the defunct SAC Capital office in London. It hired five people (Saiyid Hamid, Malte Heininger, Michael Hulme, Huseyin Yasar and Muhammed Yesilhark). If you're an equity fund manager looking for a new job, the person to remember is Muhammed Yesilhark, who joined as head of European equities.
4. David Krap at Centerview Partners
Centerview Partners, the M&A boutique and private equity boutique, crops up frequently in conversations about hiring trends with recruiters. The firm has just hired David Krap from UBS. Krap joins as a principal in the UK investment banking business. If you're looking for an 'in' into an expansionary M&A boutique, he may be a good person to know.
5. Uberto Palomba at Citadel
As we've reported a few times already, Goldman Sachs has lost a few of its senior fixed income traders so far this year. Headhunters suggest that bonuses in the bank's fixed income business weren't too good, but it may just be that the firm's staff want to work on the buy side.
Of the various recent Goldman exits for hedge funds, one of the most notable is Uberto Palomba, who quit for Citadel's fixed income team. At Goldman, Palomba was co-head of emerging market trading. If you're a senior emerging market trader who wants a hedge fund job, we suggest he'll be a good person to know.
6. Nadir Mahmud at Citi
As Reuters reported last week, banks are suddenly finding themselves seriously understaffed in FX in the wake of the price fixing investigation.
In this context, it's interesting that Citi has appointed Nadir Mahmud as global head of FX. This follows the exit of Anil Prasad, Citi's global head of FX (whose departure was said to be entirely unrelated to the FX investigation) and the firing Rohan Ramchandani, Citi's head of FX spot trading. In the circumstances Mahmud may want to refresh the team,
7. Jason Forrester at Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse has made a number of promotions, the most of interesting of which is that of Jason Forrester (formerly head of risk analytics and reporting), who's been elevated to the position of CFO and EMEA head of capital management. It's not clear whether Forrester will be hiring, but it is clear that managing capital has become a far bigger thing for banks than it used to be - so much so that it's now been wound into the CFO job title. We suspect that individuals with capital management expertise will be sought after for the foreseeable future.
8. Philip Poole at Deutsche Bank
As we noted last week, equity research hiring is becoming a big thing again. If you're a researcher looking for a new job, you may want to note that Philip Poole has just been appointed head of research at Deutsche Bank's asset management arm. Poole won't be purely focused on equities, however: he's more of a macro researcher providing 'investable ideas across all asset classes.'
9. Shamyl Malik at Morgan Stanley
Electronic trading is predicted to be a big thing (again) this year and electronic FX trading may become an even bigger thing than it is already as banks try reducing their exposure to accusations of manipulating FX markets. With this in mind, Shamyl Malik's arrival at Morgan Stanley as head of electronic FX trading could be prescient - particularly as Morgan Stanley is seeking to cut costs in its trading business and to automate more processes. Malik may well boost his team.
10. Robin Mann at Oriel Securities
2014 is shaping up to be a big year for corporate broking recruitment as banks fight for a share of the growing European IPO market. If you want a job in corporate broking, you could look at Oriel Securities, which has just appointed Robin Mann from Liberum Capital as head of corporate finance and corporate broking in London.
