A leading technology and engineering organisation is looking for an experienced Cloud Engineer / AWS Developer to join a specialist engineering team delivering mission-critical technology for UK National Security and Defence customers.
The successful candidate will work within an empowered DevOps environment, building, deploying and maintaining cloud-based applications and services on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
This is an opportunity for an experienced AWS professional to work on technically challenging projects where cloud engineering directly contributes to systems supporting critical national missions.
Engineers will have the autonomy to take ownership of solutions while benefiting from a wider engineering community, access to technical specialists and ongoing professional development.
The Role

The Role
As a Cloud Engineer, the successful candidate will work across the full software and cloud delivery lifecycle, including:
- Designing, developing, deploying and maintaining applications and services on AWS.
- Working within autonomous DevOps teams to deliver secure and resilient cloud solutions.
- Engaging with end-users and customer stakeholders to understand requirements and solve complex technical challenges.
- Identifying appropriate technologies and approaches for different customer requirements.
- Developing cloud-native applications and services.
- Contributing across the full delivery lifecycle, from design and development through to deployment and operational support.
- Identifying innovative ways to solve complex engineering and business problems.
- Working collaboratively with software engineers, cloud specialists and wider technical teams.
- Supporting customers through their ongoing cloud adoption and transformation journey.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience working with AWS and will be confident operating as an AWS subject matter expert.
Experience should include a number of the following AWS services:
- Amazon EC2
- Amazon ECS
- Amazon EKS
- Amazon S3
- AWS Lambda
- Amazon RDS
- AWS KMS
- Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)
- Amazon SNS
- Amazon SQS
- AWS IAM
- Strong AWS experience and the ability to solve complex business and technical problems.
- Scripting experience using Shell, Bash and/or Python.
- Strong coding experience in at least one Lambda-compatible programming language.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation or AWS CDK.
- Experience using Git or another version control system.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working within an Agile delivery environment, such as Scrum, Kanban, SAFe or XP.
- A willingness to learn new technologies and approaches.
Experience in the following areas would be advantageous:
- AWS Associate-level certification, such as AWS Solutions Architect, AWS Developer or AWS DevOps Engineer.
- Microservices architecture and API design.
- Docker and container platforms including Kubernetes, Amazon EKS or Amazon ECS.
- AWS operational concepts, including monitoring, observability and FinOps.
- CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins, Bamboo, TeamCity or Bitbucket.
- Automated testing frameworks and continuous testing practices.
- Linux.
- Networking, routing and firewalls.
- Cloud-native engineering and modern DevOps practices.
