CMC Materials and Processes Engineer

Cypress, CA

As a Materials and Processes Engineer for Ceramic Matrix Composites, you will take ownership of Materials & Processes technical projects aligned with Rolls-Royce strategy for the maturation and implementation of CMC technology. This is an exciting opportunity to apply theory, creativity and expertise in a hands-on environment at a dedicated, state-of-the-art CMC facility. This technology is expanding rapidly and the opportunity is available to touch multiple facets with a direct, positive program impact.

Key Accountabilities

  • Researching the micro and macro drivers behind damage initiation due to thermal, mechanical and environmental loading
  • Establishing the linkages between coupon, subcomponent and component behavior
  • Specifying, manufacturing and testing CMC materials to support characterization and research activities into material and component durability
  • Performing characterization of CMC materials using hands-on techniques including optical and scanning electron microscopy as well as more advanced techniques through external analytical laboratories
  • Planning and executing technical projects including working with external companies, universities and government agencies
  • Analyzing production & design data, characterizing materials and creating technical reports
  • Working within an integrated product team environment with resources across the country and around the world
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time both domestically and internationally

Basic:

  • Bachelors degree in Materials Engineering, Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and 4+ years experience in the testing and characterization of Ceramic Matrix Composites and/or experience in applying analytical tools and methods for understanding complex material systems or
  • Masters degree in Materials Engineering, Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and 2+ years experience in the testing and characterization of Ceramic Matrix Composites and/or experience in applying analytical tools and methods for understanding complex material systems
  • PhD in Materials Engineering, Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder

Preferred:

  • PhD in Materials Engineering
  • Background in fracture mechanics and the study of damage mechanisms in Ceramic Composite Material Systems
  • Experience in analyzing production and design data, characterizing materials and creating technical reports
  • Experience in Chemical Vapor Infiltration, Melt Infiltration or Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis processing of SiC or SiC Ceramic Matrix Composite material systems
  • Six Sigma and/or LEAN manufacturing knowledge
  • ISO9001/AS9100 experience
