Vice President - Strategy

To help identify new strategic growth opportunities, in terms of both new products and new markets, and to monitor and assess the changing global financial services landscape, Moody's Investors Service is seeking a new VP, Strategy.

Responsibilities:

In this role, the VP Strategy will have responsibility for various strategic work conducted by the group which will include analyzing new market opportunities (both product and geographic), regular tracking and project management of these opportunities and collaborating on the execution of various strategic initiatives, including acquisitions, minority investments and joint ventures.

In particular, the VP will be involved in and responsible for the following:
  • Work closely with senior business leaders to assist in business strategy development for the ratings business and assess trends, opportunities and threats facing the businesses.
  • Research and analysis of risk markets and identifying new adjacent markets, including in-depth economic, industry, and company-specific research and analysis, both domestically and globally.
  • Identify target companies for acquisitions in adjacent risk assessment markets, including clearly articulating a well-developed strategic rationale, the acquisition case and how it fits it with the overall strategy of the company.
  • Independently project manage and progress these opportunities through the organization without direct management from the SVP. This includes project scoping, planning and execution. Lead presentations to senior management which will include compiling presentations that condense a lot of information into easily digestible slides and using visuals, charts and graphs to convey messages..
  • Other ad-hoc strategic projects as requested by Moody's executive management


The Commercial Group was created in 2010 within Moody's Investors Service to provide full-time dedicated resources focused on strategy and growth of the rating agency. The Group is led by the Managing Director, Commercial. Primary functions include relationship management, product development, marketing, pricing, operations and strategy. The VP, Strategy would report to the SVP, Strategic Initiatives. There are approximately 200 people worldwide in the Commercial Group.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate for this role will be a bright, analytically strong and quantitatively focused individual with at least 6-8 years of experience in increasingly responsible positions in consulting and/or strategy. 2+ years of experience with a leading consulting firm is strongly desired. The individual must be able to develop and execute strategic project plans and summarize findings in a professional written format suitable for the board of directors and executive management. Experience in the international environment would be considered very valuable. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent writing and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present to executive management, and the ability to multi-task effectively.

In addition, candidates must be prepared to "roll up their sleeves." Moody's Corporation is a relatively large company by some measures, such as market capitalization, market influence and brand recognition; however, it is still a relatively small company as measured by its employees (approximately 11,900 worldwide). Senior executives do significant "primary" work, and the ideal candidate should enjoy the process of producing individual work product.

Finally, the VP can expect to find significant growth opportunities within Moody's if he/she pushes beyond the required expertise and becomes a key value-added partner with the corporate functions and business lines.
