Sr. Data Specialist - Data and Content Mgmt (Data Science)

The Team: The S&P Global Ratings Data and Content Management team is a new team tasked with unlocking data & delivering content to our analysts and customers. The team acts as the main point of engagement with our customers on projects, including analytical partners, to discover and drive new and enhanced content creation through definitions, lineage, mapping, readiness, and inventory. The team ensures availability of content and its end-to-end completeness and quality for both internal and external use, according to our governance standards, enabling customers to make fast, informed decisions. The team sits within our Operating Office, as part of the broader Data & Content team, and works in close partnership with many teams throughout the Ratings organization (including strategic operations, technology, analytical, commercial, etc.) and cross-divisionally with CRISIL and Market Intelligence.

The Impact: You will be a Senior Data Specialist for Data Science, playing a generalist role supporting the overall creation of new and enhanced content for products and analytical enhancements by the data science team, broadly supporting major initiatives in releasing content and new products to market. You have the opportunity to grow & develop as a team member responsible for advancing, growing, and delivering the end-to-end content generated by our data science team by leveraging our most critical financial and enterprise systems to help drive our analytic capabilities, customer satisfaction, business results and growth.

  • Broad knowledge of critical ratings and reference datasets to be combined with augmented insights for delivery to content platforms and for new and enhanced products
  • Understanding of unstructured and semi-structured data and common means for structuring, tagging, classifying, linking for dissemination on ratings applications and SPGI platforms
  • Facilitates access to APIs/databases within ratings, including seeks/scouts available data sources whenever necessary, escalates access requests and tickets, manages in-business controls regarding data access and vets all processes from compliance/IBC perspectives
  • Acts as main point of contact in our data-acquisition communications with other divisions, specifically MI and Panjiva; communicates data needs, reports outages, follows up on update requests, and finds the right data sources, databases, and data services for every project; Works closely with MI, RT and CASA teams to onboard new data sources such as social feeds or 3rd party feeds
  • Acts as a schema master and work with information architects to facilitate better documentation
  • Be keenly aware of the limitations of our data feeds for dissemination to analysts and to external clients, contractually and regulatory

  • Serve as an expert for delivering content to SPGI platforms through finalization of data including familiarity of existing and future-state R360, RatingsXpress, and RatingsDirect
  • Work in tight coordination with the Ratings Technology team, particularly Data Services, including as part of scrum teams as necessary, to ensure project deliverables are on-time and commensurate with requirements
  • Partner closely with Data Ops & Data Enablement teams to understand how the data science team can strengthen or enable new processes for high quality end-to-end content (including external dissemination)
  • Foster and engage in close partnership with and across many key organizations, such as technology, analytical, strategic operations, product, and commercial
  • Set up team members for success as project owners and other stretch assignments
  • Manage communication & perform stakeholder management throughout the organization around cross-practice content, including content readiness, project status, customer needs, etc.
  • Understand customer needs, both internal & external, and respond to their needs through the use learning agility
  • Employ governance and data quality principles and use business and operational expertise to provide direction to the design of new processes.
  • Problem solves with Ratings Technology and Data Science team to provide and build on existing ratings, reference, market and financial content to derive further value from data science work, take responsibility of driving for results, and provides solutions based on best practices and new perspectives for delivering content to market.

  • Be keenly aware of the limitations of our data feeds (contractual, regulatory, controls, other) for dissemination to analysts and to external clients; Ensure adherence to regulatory and contractual obligations
  • Maintain close coordination with data science and scrum team activity, including as part of team when necessary, to support leveraging of systems and extraction of data science projects for insights
  • Manage the design of new data & content management processes regarding onboarded data science outputs
  • Lead change and role model and empower innovation, customer focus, and experimentation within your team
  • Run ad-hoc reports and analyses to consult with senior stakeholders on decisions pertaining to data science projects and products
  • Recognize new opportunities provided by analytical changes including criteria and guidance and maintenance of existing products and machine learning models based on changes
  • Communicating goals and objectives; assuming responsibility for decision making; aligning team efforts; building accountability for and measuring progress in achieving results; partnering with key stakeholders and business leaders to ensure products and/or services meet requirements and expectations while aligning with departmental strategies; and influencing units to operate in alignment with business objectives

Qualifications / What we're looking for
  • At least 5 years of content-related experience within the financial services industry
  • Strong domain knowledge & content expertise with S&P Enterprise datasets, systems, and ancillary products
  • Crucial to have minimum working knowledge of the query interfaces for various data stores (and the ability/willingness to new ones)
  • Able to query/explore/link datasets
  • Has general familiarity with various DB technologies and philosophies (such as relational, columnar, NoSQL technologies) and knows their main applications/weaknesses
  • Familiar with common querying paradigms such as:
  • SQL
  • Search query syntax (e.g. Elastic)
  • Ability to run some analytics (aggregations/distributions/etc)
  • Basic coding skills (Python) a plus.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Agile (scrum) experience
  • Content product experience a plus
  • Data technical skills a plus (e.g. data querying, data analysis)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
