The Role: Reporter, Power Finance

The Location: Charlottesville, Va. or virtual

Grade: (for internal use only) G8

This team covers the transition to a low-carbon energy system with a focus on the power and utility companies driving that change through their investment decisions. As a reporter in this group, you'll dive deep into the capital plans, mergers and acquisitions, renewable projects, batteries, electric vehicle infrastructure and other power plant investments reshaping the grid. The team is based in Charlottesville, Va., but we're also looking for journalists who are productive in a virtual work environment.

The Impact: Our real-time, subscription-based news service reaches an influential readership of investment bankers and managers, and energy industry professionals in the global business community.

The Team: With more than 300 journalists across five continents, we are rapidly growing our coverage of financial and sector news. You will work closely with editors and journalists around the world. This position is part of the Energy team, within the broader commodities group, which covers the oil and gas, power and utilities, and renewable sectors.

The Career Opportunity: You will be covering the energy transition at a granular level, digging deep into the investment decisions made by electric utilities as they reduce the share of power generated by fossil fuels and add renewable assets and battery storage to their portfolios, among other major issues. To drive your reporting and tell this story in innovative ways, you'll have access to our massive database with comprehensive coverage of the market, regulatory, corporate, and power plant data.

Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only):
S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is
$38.4k to $79.7k. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location.
In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan.

Responsibilities:
  • Cover the electric power sector focusing on financial developments driven by the energy transition
  • Cover competitive power markets and utility state-level regulatory activity
  • Write daily stories as well as features supported by data
  • Cover conference calls and interview company executives
What We're Looking For:

Basic Qualificiations:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.
  • Relevant journalism experience.
  • Command of journalistic best practices (AP style, libel issues, etc.).
  • Must be able to juggle daily assignments and longer-term enterprise features.
  • Knowledge of finance, the power and utility industry or commodities markets an advantage.
  • Must have an affinity for analyzing numbers, using in-house data intelligence, financial reports and other industry information.
  • Fluency in English necessary
  • This position is limited to those with the indefinite right to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience operating in a real-time news environment
  • Business journalism research and writing skills
  • Experience covering regulatory, legal and financial developments
