Associate, Business Strategy - ETFs and Index Investments (EII)
BlackRock's ETF and Index Investments business (EII) helps retail and institutional investors build better portfolios with the industry's leading suite of index investment tools. Index investing is an essential ingredient in portfolio construction to design portfolio outcomes. We enable them to replace individual securities, to take short-term market views, to invest cash rapidly, to execute more efficiently than swaps, futures or individual bonds, to take long-term core positions and to construct efficient portfolios. We serve every kind of investor: pensions, insurers, sovereign wealth funds, central banks, asset managers, wealth advisors and individual investors.

About the role
The Global Business Strategy team is responsible for driving business strategy and leading initiatives across regions and functions. This role within the business strategy team serves the important role of supporting strategy projects and initiatives. From scoping to implementation and tracking, the role is a key point of contact for other parts of EII and BlackRock. It requires the capability to work in agile, cross-functional teams and utilize analytical abilities to come up with creative solutions to business problems, communicating impactful solutions with tangible next steps to senior members of the team. Within EII, you will work closely with the Global Business Intelligence team as well as regional strategy teams around the world to develop insights and make measurable recommendations.

Key responsibilities
  • Work with strategy team, senior management and business leaders to determine strategic objectives and opportunities to meet these goals
  • Contribute to and execute upon business strategy projects and initiatives through different phases:
    • Identify problem or challenge, define approach and required analyses, create work-plan
    • Gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources (industry research, financial publications, and EII and broader BlackRock colleagues including field sales, marketing, etc.)
    • Present findings and engage senior team members in problem solving and on potential issues
    • Build impactful reports/presentations to communicate with BlackRock and EII senior management on project progress, final outcomes and implementation plans
  • Collaborate with other colleagues at all levels throughout EII and the broader firm (e.g., U.S. Wealth, EMEA iShares & Wealth, APG, Business Operations) to drive projects through to completion
  • Assist in formulating business intelligence and insights (especially competitor monitoring)
  • Facilitate broader planning across the business and field ad-hoc requests from management

  • Potential development to broader business and progressively senior roles within EII and at BlackRock
  • Track record of people migrating from Strategy positions within BlackRock into elevated roles within a business or elsewhere in the firm
Experience / Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in asset management, wealth management, investment banking or strategy consulting experience (financial services sector experience is preferred)
  • Understanding of the asset management industry and the ETF landscape
  • Experience in working with senior leaders, with the ability to translate sophisticated views and opinions into straightforward analyses
  • High levels of demonstrated ownership over work product and project engagement
  • High degree of professional discretion, integrity and judgment
  • Undergraduate degree required
Skills / Knowledge:
  • Technical skills: advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills with ability to quickly produce management-level quality presentations and produce robust Excel models (forecasting, sensitivity analysis, summaries)
  • Process/project management: effective project management capabilities with the ability to manage timelines, monitor progress across different working groups and navigate trade-offs
  • Interpersonal skills: proven relationship-building abilities, particularly through influencing peers and collaborating across different groups
  • Positive demeanour: high level of motivation, independence and inquisitiveness, comfort with ambiguity and the ability to function well under stress or time pressure
  • Intellectual curiosity : interested in the industry and looking to learn more about asset management, investment vehicles and BlackRock
  • Good judgment : ability to take prudent risks while acting as a partner to our clients and colleagues
