About this role

Due to the recent significant expansion in BlackRock Alternative Investors (BAI), we are looking for a permanent hire in New York to join the Alternatives Product Tax Group. This global team currently comprises 28 staff in total and is headed up by a Managing Director based in New York.

Role Description

This is an in-house tax compliance and advisory role with strong technical knowledge required and business exposure to the private Alternatives platform (with different asset classes including Infrastructure, Real Estate, Private Equity, Credit and Hedge Funds). The roleholder would be responsible for assisting in covering the Alternative products relating to the Alternatives platform and will report to a Vice President within the Alternatives Product Tax Group based in New York. The role involves working laterally both with members of the global Alternatives Product Tax team (based in the US, EMEA, and Asia Pac) as well as the broader US Product Tax team (i.e., non - Alternatives).

Key Responsibilities

For the assigned Alternatives areas outlined above:

  • Drive tax-related entity formation processes

  • Leverage tax knowledge base to standardize and integrate process-heavy workstreams on an ongoing basis

  • Ensure compliance with relevant tax requirements with respect to the liquidation and restructuring of entities

  • Coordinate, review, and prepare, if necessary, Deferred Tax calculations and ASC 740 memos on financial statements

  • Collaborate with internal partners and external providers to ensure tax payments are made in a timely manner

  • Ensure robust backup and depository for paper filings and tax notice remediations

  • Coordinate and prioritize tax notices and work through relevant tax issues and remediation

  • Ensure compliance and accuracy of tax forms, understand when refreshing is required and remediate when necessary

  • Prepare and coordinate FBAR and 5471 Category 2 filings for US directors of applicable foreign corporations

  • Manage statement of work and invoice submissions and process and review and ensure reasonableness of invoice.

  • Help to build robust practices and efficiencies with respect to tax operational processes


Skills and Experience - required

The following are required from all candidates:

  • Accounting degree with an accounting firm background

  • General knowledge of Alternatives tax concepts, requirements, and relevant US tax issues

  • Basic understanding of US and non-US tax classification concepts

  • Experience advising fund management firms, including their tax teams


Skills and experience - advantageous

The following would be of advantage, but are neither required nor expected of candidates:

  • Knowledge of US tax compliance work, including federal, state and international tax reporting for commingled funds, segregated mandates and funds of one

  • Understanding of the fund and SPV structures used globally for private equity funds and their investments (specific asset class experience is preferable but not absolutely required)

  • An appreciation of the corporate tax issues faced by a large fund management group

This is a role that involves coordination and collaboration with many internal and external partners. Accordingly, it is important that the roleholder:

  • Has strong interpersonal skills and able to work well in a global team environment and with multiple internal and external partners

  • Has strong attention to detail

  • Is highly organized and proactive

  • Is able to perform effectively in fast-paced environments


Experience and qualifications

It is envisaged that the roleholder will hold a professional tax qualification and will have spent some time during their career working in an accountancy firm or in-house at a private equity, hedge fund or asset management company.

The roleholder should have at least 1.5 - 2 years' experience working in Alternatives fund taxation.
