Assistant Vice President,Tax - State & Local/ Corporate (Garden City, NY)

The Role is based in the Garden City, NY office. Some travel will be required within the firm's Garden City, 520 Madison Avenue (HQ) and Stamford offices.

State & Local Tax Group:
State & Local is responsible for determining the state income tax amounts that are reported in the firm's consolidated financial statements and included in our public SEC filings as well as separate company statements. The team evaluates each of Jefferies' business units in order to determine the appropriate strategies and methods for allocating taxable income among the various states. State & Local is also responsible for the preparation of the firm's state income tax returns and handling audits, appeals and negotiations with various state tax authorities.

Jefferies' Tax Department is expanding to support the Firm's continued growth and diversification. The Firm seeks a highly motivated individual who will work closely with the Director of State and Local Tax to assist with tax compliance, tax provision, tax examinations, research and planning.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Preparing the Firm's state tax provision for purposes of its quarterly and year-end earnings release and financial statement filings.
  • Reviewing tax returns and related reports to ensure compliance with all state and local tax statutes and regulations.
  • Preparing/reviewing detailed state apportionment schedules for the Firm's various business units and joint ventures.
  • Perform research and draft memoranda on various state issues.
  • Assist with tax audits.
  • Handling various state tax notices from tax authorities and proposing solutions.

Required Background:
  • Significant experience in some or all of the following areas: Multi-state income tax compliance for corporate and pass-through entities, apportionment methodologies, unitary filing, partner allocations, partner withholding rules, tax research, ASC 740, and MS Excel modeling.
  • Knowledgeable in Corptax, Thomson Reuters OneSource or Go Systems RS, RIA Checkpoint, CCH, and/or BNA.
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting or business-related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Enrolled Agent, preferable, but not required.
  • 4-6 years of relevant work experience at a major accounting firm and/or in the Financial Services Industry.
  • Ability to learn new areas and concepts quickly, and thrive in a dynamic, time-sensitive environment.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Team player with strong written and verbal communication skills.
