Job Summary

Barings is seeking an experienced, transformative candidate to lead the Data Science and Insights team. The successful candidate will thrive in a matrixed environment where she/he will lead a team that is responsible for modeling complex problems, developing business insights, improving operating productivity, and formulating new hypotheses. The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to lead a team that applies academic and practical knowledge of statistical, algorithmic, and mathematical techniques. They must have substantial user-directed reporting, data visualization, machine learning, and robotic process automation expertise. The ideal candidate will have significant data science leadership acumen and demonstrated prior success. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate evangelical change management and partner engagement capabilities to help build awareness of and confidence in this teams ability to accelerate the companys performance. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer, and is a member of the Global Technology and Operations leadership group. The role will likely be based in either London, England or Charlotte, NC, although other options may be considered.

Primary Responsibilities

  • This role will require the creative application of data skills, strong team development and leadership skills, an entrepreneurial attitude, and the ability to influence senior leaders across the company
  • The DSI leader:
    • must build, scale, and lead a high-impact data science team
    • will collaborate with other leaders to create a framework for data-informed decision making
    • will work with Enterprise Data Group and the Chief Data Officer to define a comprehensive and flexible data model
    • will define best practices for data science processes, from problem definition to options analysis to final presentation
    • will be part of the strategic analysis team to uncover business opportunities and inform team direction
    • will provide feedback and guide the professional and technical development of the data scientists
  • Day-to-day activities include (1) project conceptualization and prioritization, (2) experimentation, (3) identification of strategic data insights and growth opportunities, (4) coaching the data scientists and (5) delivering data science commitments
  • Also defined is an expectation to recommend new architectural designs and enhancements to existing data systems to optimize for flexible, user-driven low latency reporting and self-service analytics for stakeholder clients
  • The candidate will lead the evolution of applied data science widely across Barings and create a roadmap of data-driven innovation.
  • Provide expert technical consultation internally to other analytic teams
  • Own all phases of the data science product lifecycle (exploratory data analysis, model development, model production deployment, and ongoing evaluation)
  • Oversight of reporting team and application of a self-service model mindset utilizing PBI and other reporting tools managed by existing team
  • Highly technical and hands-on but also able to play product and project management roles routinely
  • Prioritize sprints with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure alignment and transparency of commitments
  • Challenge the internal data science team on advanced analytical concepts


  • Master of Science or higher in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, or Mathematics
  • 5+ years of Data Science team leadership experience, with expertise in machine learning and statistical modeling
  • Exemplary written, verbal, and presentation skills, with proven capability crafting a compelling narrative driven by data
  • Experience with full stack AI/ML tools
  • Experience working in Microsoft Azure or other complex cloud ecosystem
