Chief Credit Officer - Ameriprise Bank
Job Description

The Chief Credit Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining credit policies for all lending products including consumer cards, real estate loan products, and unsecured and secured lines of credit. This role will define and maintain a credit approval process to ensure acceptable lending authorities, ensure adequate loan loss reserves are maintained within acceptable levels of risk and oversee portfolio management to maximize economic benefit in partnership with the Controller. Position will monitor and report on portfolio performance to management, the Board of Directors, and regulators; along with making recommendations for ongoing account management, monitor the performance of third-party collection activity, and coordinate with the product development and marketing areas of the Bank.


  • Participate in overall management of Ameriprise Bank as a member of the leadership team to assist in achieving long-term profitability, growth, and strategic direction.
  • Chair the Credit Risk Committee; along with being an active member on the Management Risk Committee, Asset/Liability Committee and CRA Committee.
  • Develop and oversee all underwriting standards and policies, product development and risk-based pricing programs.
  • Work closely with compliance to ensure all aspects of lending are compliant with federal and state regulations, and Company Policies.
  • Work collaboratively across the Company, specifically with leaders, to support the Company's vision, credit goals and a team environment.
  • Reviews and approves large and complex loans prior to submission to loan committee.
  • Present credit position to board of directors and various groups.
  • Oversee new and renewed extensions of credit ensuring compliance with policy and regulations.
  • Govern and enforce risk-rating and underwriting standards.
  • Manage, monitor, and report loan concentrations opposite regulatory guidance and internal targets.
  • Act as principal credit liaison to all regulatory agencies, outside accountants, consultants and others as needed.
  • Leverage loan data and business intelligence to improve the Company's overall risk performance and guidelines.
  • Identify potential problem credits, coupled with appropriate intervention, to minimize losses.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of financial industry, economy, market conditions and rates.
  • Manage the budget for areas of responsibility and work to identify and solve potential challenges and opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting, or related field.
  • 10+ years' experience, concentrated in Financial Services/Banking with several years in risk and/or controls related roles; ideally in a Chief Credit Officer capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of lending markets and products, especially secured real estate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and execution of credit and risk management principles.
  • Strong analytical skills with credit, credit structuring, and lending procedures and products.
  • Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with employees at all levels within the organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required, including presentations and written reports.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships across the organizational structure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Ability to travel periodically for business purposes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, CPA or other advance degree
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting rules
  • Big 4 or top tier management consulting experience
