Private Equity Analyst, Biotechnology

Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 50 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.

In anticipation of expanding our investment efforts in the private biotechnology marketplace, we seek to recruit a Private Equity Analyst to join our Healthcare investment team.  Wellington has managed dedicated public-equity healthcare portfolios since 1984 and is the largest manager of such assets worldwide.  The firm has invested in private markets since 2003 and in private biotechnology companies since 2011.  In addition, Wellington launched its dedicated private equity business in 2014. We currently manage $2.4 billion in assets across two private equity funds.  About 20 percent of the assets are earmarked for biotechnology investments.

The Private Equity Analyst will be based in Boston and will partner with senior members of the team to source and diligence private biotechnology investment opportunities.  In order to optimize deal flow, the Analyst will develop broad relationships within the biomedical venture capital and crossover investor communities. The Analyst will source, track, and evaluate potential biotechnology investments, conduct in-depth due diligence on both the scientific and business merits of select deals, and develop investment recommendations. In addition, the Analyst will curate the deal flow from initial contact through exit, and will assist with investment and strategic decision making.

We are looking for a self-directed, hard-working team player, who loves both biomedical science and the investment management industry, and who has the insight, tools and interest to work at the interface of the two. The Analyst will have an excellent scientific background, strong analytical capabilities, good financial modeling skills, and an eagerness to apply his or her expertise in support of Wellington's investments in private biotechnology companies.

Specific qualifications for the position are the following:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in clinical medicine, biomedical research, investment banking, private equity, and/or venture capital investing;
  • Ability to collaborate with experienced, cross-functional deal teams;
  • Strong bottom-up fundamental approach to research;
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in a collaborative, team-based, results-oriented environment;
  • Independence of thought, intellectual curiosity, and an entrepreneurial nature; and
