Job Purpose/Background:
BlackRock's Systematic Fixed Income team is seeking a quantitative investment researcher for its Relative Value group. The candidate will join a global team of portfolio managers and researchers that manage all stages of a systematic investing process, including idea generation, quantitative research, analytics development, model implementation, execution and performance attribution. The candidate will be expected to contribute in each of these areas with emphasis on code development and rigorous data-driven research. The role will be based in San Francisco.


  • Develop innovative investment ideas using quantitative analysis

  • Deliver high quality research using advanced statistical techniques

  • Contribute to the team's code infrastructure and trading tools

  • Construct and support quantitative investment models

  • Work closely with all members of the team and the wider systematic platform

Skills and experience

  • Exceptional quantitative academic background, ideally a PhD or a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or another technical discipline. Candidates with a Mathematical Economics or Econometrics academic back ground are also encouraged to apply. A proven ability to come up with own creative ideas would be a strong plus.

  • Very strong knowledge of general Statistical modelling methods, including Machine Learning and Econometric techniques would be highly desired, as well as solid experience working with real-world data.

  • Strong programming skills in Python or in at least one similar research language.

  • Knowledge of another object-oriented language would be a plus. Some knowledge of SQL and Unix would be helpful but not necessary.

  • A passion for financial markets is essential, perhaps demonstrated through some practical experience of applying macroeconomic theory to investing problems. Similarly, theoretical or practical experience in systematic investing would be a plus.

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to work efficiently in a team-oriented environment
