What is Operational Cloud Services team responsible for?

The overall team is responsible for the Architecture, Engineering and Operations of all corporate infrastructure servers worldwide. This includes supporting existing data center services and implementing complimentary cloud services as well.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of a Senior Engineer?

The Senior Engineer is a key member of the Operational Cloud Services team. As such, the individual in this position will participate in numerous projects which are global in nature and critical to the company service delivery to our customers. This individual will be a technical lead in specific areas of their expertise and assist other engineers in developing and testing solutions to complex infrastructure and application development environments. The right candidate will be responsible for interfacing with the internal development team submitting the project requests and assisting them in defining requirements and the scope of work necessary to achieve their goal. The candidate will be required to build technical designs and solution documentation with the end goal of having our operations implementation team being able to build and deliver the required services on-time and within the bounds and budget set out in the project request.

This individual will closely collaborate with senior leaders, peers and other technical resources across cross-functional teams as well as vendors to ensure designs are implemented with the ability to be scalable and flexible in our ever changing/evolving technical environment. The individual will be required to have excellent communication skills to interface with all these resources in order to build and provide a team oriented approach to designs and implementations. The individual will also be expected to mentor other engineers with the goal of having a successful cross-trained team which can support all technologies and be available for Tier 3 On-Call assistance when appropriate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Primary: AIX and RHEL engineer activities. This will include scripting and VMware virtualization activities as well as builds for physical servers. Also testing and preparing the builds to support all the Layer 2/3 software (i.e. Backup, Monitoring).
  • Secondary: Backup/Recovery/DR and Storage engineering
  • Tertiary: Automation implementations with BMC BSA
  • In-depth knowledge and skills/experience in designing, documenting, implementing and testing the following solutions:
    • AIX 6/7 and Power8 Servers
    • RHEL 7 builds on both VMware virtual machines and physical servers
    • Building scripts to support projects including: PowerShell, Python, Unix Scripting
    • Implementing fully redundant/HA builds for servers across data centers in multiple geographic locations
    • Understanding how to build and implement servers across multiple protocols and storage types:
      • CIFS, NFS, Fiber Channel, iSCSI protocols
      • Block and File storage
    • Storage experience will include: SnapShot, SnapMirror, SnapVault type of technologies
    • Replication, Disaster Recovery and Backup/Recovery Scenarios
    • Storage Automation via WSA or other automated build environments for Windows and Linux/Solaris
  • Knowledge of the following other technical environments:
    • IBM VTL and ProtecTIER backup solutions
    • Network connectivity related to storage communications
    • NAS and SAN architectures and designs
    • Scripting Languages: PERL, PowerShell, Shell Scripting (Unix)
    • Storage and Server Automation via BMC BSA (Bladelogic Server Automation)
    • On-Call Tier 3 Support

What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?
  • 10+ years' experience delivering enterprise AIX and RHEL infrastructure engineering solutions for global mid to large sized corporations with geographically dispersed populations
  • HW/SW experience: IBM AIX 7 and Power8; Red Hat RHEL 7; Cisco UCS; VMware ESXi; NetApp and EMC storage arrays
  • Experienced with scripting languages; i.e. PowerShell, PERL, Python, NSH, Shell
  • Passionate, collaborative, results-oriented Engineer with a proven track record of developing effective and appropriate Infrastructure solutions
  • Experience in teaming with geographically distributed and culturally diverse work-groups
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively and proactively communicate their documented total solutions to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong organization, planning, and project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal / relationship management skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • BMC BSA and Server/Storage Automation Experience
Skills & Abilities:
  • Solutions will include addressing project technical requirements, building technical solution documents/diagrams, financial cost considerations, transitions to operational processes and Operational runbook turnover
  • Efficiently fulfill customer and business demand by partnering with Architects, Operations and other stakeholders to design, communicate and implement Strategies, Technology Roadmaps, Standards, Processes and Services
  • Partner with Global Information Security to develop secure designs based standards that deliver security capabilities which ensure adherence with security, audit and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Work with Capacity Planning and Performance Management for the assigned environments to make critical recommendations on designs and implementations/builds
  • Stay abreast of new and emerging technologies and processes
  • Independently and as a team member, lead, influence and mentor technical concepts/methods and associated engineering lifecycle processes. Make and influence technical decisions
  • Mentor junior team members and support teams to enhance their skills and abilities
  • Partner with Operations to establish criteria and execution to ensure proper transition from Engineering to Operational areas for project/technology delivery and production support
  • Contribute to and/or lead the triage and resolution of escalated, complex problems to ensure timely production restoration or quality of service
