  • Overview

    SMBC is looking for undergraduate or master’s students for a 12 week summer internship in the Lending Management Group in the Los Angeles branch. This opportuntity offers a hands-on experience in US Corporate Banking where participants will have the opportunity to work on a team, be exposed to projects within their respective business area, and support a range of tasks relevant to our clients. We offer many different opportunities including working with financial models, assisting in the development of client presentations, and conducting research – all to improve your understanding of the global banking industry. Your internship culminates in a project and/or case study where you will apply the skills and knowledge you’ve developed over the course of the summer. This opportunity offers an excellent gateway to our full-time Analyst Program.


    Conduct analysis and research on the performance of borrowers to assess historical performance and prepare projections; (i.e.. Financial Statement Analysis)
    Conduct quarterly and annual reviews of loan portfolio and handle a variety of system and procedural issues related to the borrowers such as internal grading, monthly/quarterly reporting, and other ad hoc projects.
    Undertake research and analytics related to specific sectors, regions or loans, and stay abreast of current market conditions.
    Assist with other credit events that may impact the borrower.


    Currently pursuing an undergraduate (Junior) or Master’s degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2020 / Spring 2021; excellent academic record
    0 to 2 years of comparable or relevant experience

    Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
    Financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills; keen interest and demonstrated study in finance and financial markets
    Ability to comfortably interact with senior executives in a professional and mature manner
    Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
    Intellectual curiosity
    Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
    Self-driven and motivated; takes personal ownership of specific assignments.
    Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
    Demonstrates a high degree of attention to detail and an ability to complete work accurately and in a timely manner against strict deadlines.
