Job Description The Knowledge Enterprise at Arizona State University is the key arm of the university responsible for advancing research, innovation, strategic partnerships, entrepreneurship, and international development. We are seeking an innovative and experienced senior director for planning and budget who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical roles managing the enterprise’s $235M portfolio.

The senior director is a thought leader who develops and implements an institutional funding model that is grounded in transparency, creates incentives to grow resources while managing costs, encourages innovation, and aligns resources with the institution's strategic vision and goals.

The senior director will take the lead in budget management, planning, analysis, execution, reporting, cost containment and accountability for KE resources in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer for the Office of the Executive Vice President.

Skilled in addressing complex and sensitive issues. Often required to present to senior leadership, the ASU budget and planning office and other internal and external stakeholders.

Establishes and fosters a strong, cohesive, and high-functioning team focused on results built on trust, robust dialogue, commitment, and accountability. Clearly conveys KE expectations and builds commitment to institutional purpose and goals.
Determines the resources, support, and professional development required for team members to be effective.

Commitment to service and effective business processes
Builds a culture of service and stewardship. Identifies needs of end users, internal stakeholders, and external stakeholders, and establishes, monitors, and continuously improves business processes to meet requirements.

Essential Duties

  • Develop and administer the KE operating, investment and cash flow budgets; develop consolidated forecasts and make recommendations for future funds needed to support the goals of KE.
  • Maintain KE long-term financial plans and advise the EVP/COO and executive leadership team on financial risks and opportunities.
  • Establish financial strategies, including timing and structure.
  • Develop business planning process, prepare reports and analyze all key metrics for all financial plans.
  • Provide complex analyses of financial data and project revenues and expenditures.
  • Prepare monthly forecasts and quarterly business reviews for all functional areas of the business and related subsidiaries.
  • Identify variances between actual and budgeted financial results at the end of each reporting period.
  • Perform ad-hoc financial analysis to support senior leadership decisions.
  • Develop long-range strategic financial plan based on financial goals and input from strategy and assumptions.
  • Lead the implementation of financial planning/budgeting modules by working with key stakeholders
  • Establish governance process for input on annual budget assumptions and subsequent reviews and approval
  • Assume accountability for the overall KE budget ensuring resources are allocated appropriately, targets are maintained and alignment with key goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND ten (10) years of related experience which includes five (5) years of management/supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Drive University vehicle and/or cart to campus site
