The Role:
The Head of Global Finance Operations and Shared Services is accountable for all aspects of Finance Operations for both the insurance and non-insurance entities across M&G plc, including Accounts Payable, Banking and reconciliations. The role will support the production of financial and capital reporting through the oversight of all ledger operations and associated reconciliations, together with the management of key actuarial and accounting source data and oversight of all investment accounting operations for PAC and PPL.

The role-holder will be expected to drive the next phase of organisation design work to shape the structure and operating model of the team, and lead the team through this change. There will be significant integration challenges to manage within this area as multiple reporting processes and practices come together to drive efficiencies. A step change in ways of working will be required to focus on process efficiencies, controls, and the implementation of scalable processes that can be leveraged in the planned international expansion, utilising new technology and analytical techniques.

The Head of Global Finance Operations and Shared Services is expected to work with peers across Finance and the broader organisation as part of a collective effort in transforming the Finance function and providing leadership to the Global Finance Operations and Shared Services team.

This role will begin working remotely and then will have a blended approach between working from home and our Stirling, Edinburgh or London office.

Key Work Level Accountabilities:
Integration Leader:
  • Critical role in translating strategy into implementation plans, influences and contributes to the strategy
  • Ensures successful implementation of defined strategy
  • Typically leaders of teams, or technical roles will lead the provision of advice across an area of expertise
  • Balances competing requirements to deliver a balanced set of results, resolving significant or priority conflicts
  • Addresses problems with broad reaching ramifications, with a need to manage different parts of complex systems and link to the broader picture
  • Responsible for driving continuous improvement
  • Drives incremental and transformational change in response to experience of market and customer needs, typically leads the delivery of major programmes of work
  • Allocates resources optimally to deliver on strategy, prioritising conflicting resource demands, agendas and activities

Key Responsibilities for this role:
  • Lead the operation of transactional finance processes and controls
  • Accountable for all postings to ledgers across all insurance and non-insurance entities, together with associated balance sheet recs and reconciliation MI
  • Manage our key actuarial and accounting source data and appropriate analytics, including ownership of relevant Finance data marts and associated data projects
  • Data Governance Framework covering all data sources and all entities
  • Lead the development of the finance systems and elements of deterministic modelling that support the delivery of efficient and effective Finance processes
  • Implementation of IME policy & framework for actual IME costs, cost allocation framework and transfer pricing framework
  • Lead the coordination of project demand and resourcing for Finance Operations
  • Deliver a high quality, customer-centric range of finance services
  • Support the Director of Finance - Reporting, Operations and International Shared Services to help shape and drive the transformation of financial reporting, integrating the separate finance teams and processes into one, digitally enabled way of working
  • Accountable for coordination of control MI across Finance - Reporting, Operations and International Shared Services function
  • Oversight and line management of the M&G plc Corporate Insurance and CASS teams

Key Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
  • A qualified Accountant or Actuary with significant post qualification experience
  • Significant experience of leading a Finance Operations team in a life and pensions organisation
  • Experienced in leading large teams and of providing leadership to technical specialists, guiding a function through transformational change
  • Previous experience of insurance accounting for Life Insurance, including requirements of UK GAAP and International Accounting Standards
  • Experience in delivery of transformed finance functions including experience of "right sizing" functions and in leading technology and automation across finance processes
  • Sound knowledge of industry trends, best practice and developments, good networks / links with external bodies and individuals in the same field
  • Significant experience in identifying and guiding the delivery of process and control improvements
  • Experience of managing third party relationships
  • Comfortable managing teams across multiple locations and/or virtual teams
  • Inspirational leader capable of building and maintaining a high-performing team
  • Proven ability to think strategically yet be comfortable adopting a hands-on approach as needed, and staying close to the detail
