Data Scientist, DWP Digital:

Salary: Salary is up to £39,087 National roles. Where the maximum salary is offered, an additional allowance may be payable based upon assessment of capability/skills of up to £7,339. London, salary is up to £43,270. Where the maximum salary is offered, an additional allowance may be payable based upon assessment of capability/skills of up to £3,156.

Locations: Leeds, London, Sheffield, and Newcastle

About you

This is an unprecedented time for digital, data and technology specialists as government harnesses digital technologies, skills and tools to transform public services on a global scale.

In your capacity of Senior Data Scientists and Data Scientists at DWP you will join a network of digital, data and technology leaders that has developed into an essential forum for co-ordinating and driving transformation across government.

You will have:

Essential criteria for all Senior Data Scientist roles

  • Academic background in Maths, Statistics, Computer Science or similar experience and aptitude.
  • Practical experience delivering innovative, data driven solutions and building models on large or complex data sets including gathering disparate data, extensive data manipulation, and application of analytical techniques and visualisation of the results.
  • Technical versatility to pick up new technologies or languages relevant to the data manipulation, data analytics and data visualisation domain. Experience of software or data engineering essentials including producing repeatable data pipelines, version control, testing and performance optimisation (exploiting ETL, SQL, NoSQL, distributing processing expertise). You will have R, Python
  • and/or Spark (or similar query-based or high level programming experience) to an intermediate level.
  • Good experience of a range of core analytics techniques (e.g. regression, clustering, PCA) and how to avoid or mitigate the pitfalls
  • Delivery focused, applying 80:20 thinking and comfortable to create working software quickly as oppose to one-off insight or production strength solutions.
  • Problem solving approach with the curiosity and proactivity to engage and understand both the strategic business goals and the end user's needs.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas simply to technical and non-technical audiences.
