Trainee - Metal Exchange Desk
What we do
We source, store, ship and distribute agricultural products including coffee, sugar, molasses and grains. We trade those products around the world, and with some, we process and brand them for industrial customers and the supermarket shelves.
We help many of our customers manage pricing risk through financial products. For others we act as a broker, executing orders for hedge funds and professional traders. And we do our own clearing through exchanges, such as the Chicago Board of Trade and the London Metals Exchange.
Why we do it
There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world – situations change; crops fail – but we’re known for making sure our customers can still do business. It’s a stance we’ve held to be true since 1783.
For us, it’s about managing risk and providing security. For example, we help our farmers grow better-quality crops, more sustainably, by teaching them agricultural techniques that will keep their land productive for future generations.
That way we can help our growers achieve a better, more sustainable standard of living. And we help protect our customers from that price-change volatility with tools such as hedging and futures.

The London Metal Exchange (LME), in the heart of the City, is the last 'open outcry' trading ring in Europe. ED&F Man is one of nine Clearing Members with exclusive right to trade metals on behalf of our clients in the ring. This makes our LME team a unique, close knit and highly supportive unit. They combine a long history of expertise and tradition with a modern and forward thinking approach.
After developing several junior employees into progressive roles within Capital Markets, we'd like to take on an additional trainee, based in our London Bridge offices with frequent visits to the ring in Moorgate to support the team. This really is a very unique opportunity that will suit someone with the tenacity, drive and patience to learn about the industry, whilst providing robust and reliable support to the existing team
Your tasks will be varied, you could be inputting trade data, checking entries, agreeing traders' positions, and manually calculating traders' profit and loss.
Full, on-the-job training is provided, but you'll need quick and thorough maths, great IT skills (and the ability to teach yourself new IT skills) and minimum two A-Levels. You will need to demonstrate commitment, attention to detail and interest in our work during the recruitment process, as well as undertaking some online maths and reasoning tests.
