Department overview:

The MECHS (MS SQL Server, Elastic Cloud, Hadoop and Sybase) Database Team is the part of the Database Administration group within Nomura International London and as such is responsible for the administration of all Nomura's MS SQL Server, Elastic Cloud, Hadoop and Sybase systems. The team is also the main centre of expertise for application developers that require advice on using these database products. The database team provides 8am to 5:30pm onsite support Monday to Friday using DBAs based in London and Mumbai. Global support for database systems is shared with the Global MECHS DBA team which requires the London team to support the global systems between the hours of 08:00 to 16:00 as part of the Follow The Sun Support (FTSS) rota.

Role description:

As a dedicated member of the DBA team the candidate will be expected to use their technical knowledge to contribute to the advancement of the RDBMS environments within Nomura. Apart from supporting the production environment this role will mainly involve supporting application teams when they use the MS SQL Server, Elastic Cloud, Hadoop, Sybase products and help them make best use of the technology.

Key objectives critical to success:

The candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. In addition the candidate will be used to interacting with multiple application groups working in different business areas. Proven ability to learn new information quickly. Good team player who puts the teams' objectives before their own.

The candidate should be already aware of the various cloud environments and the challenges of deploying into the off premise cloud solutions and be adaptive to moving more into a DevOps role as the company transforms.

The candidate should be able to show that they are forward looking in automating tasks wherever possible.

Skills, qualifications and knowledge required:

The candidate will have a background in a large global organisation that had a dedicated DBA team supporting MS SQL Server, Elastic Cloud, Hadoop or Sybase.

Proven track record of 24x7 production support of a database real-estate that contain MS SQL Server and Sybase is desirable

Logical design and performance tuning of MS SQL Server and/or Sybase environments.

Appreciation of OS problem determination techniques within Linux environments.

Administration experience of a Hadoopernvironment is desirable.

Python and other scripting languages are desirable.
