About Railpen

The Railways Pension Scheme is one of the UK’s largest and longest established pension funds. Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £36 billion of assets on behalf of the scheme’s 460,000 members and their families who are connected to the railway industry. Our mission is to secure our members future. To achieve this, we invest the scheme’s assets to generate strong investment returns over the long term, in both public and private assets.

Your Team

The performance function sits within the Investment Risk Management Team (IRM), which is part of Railpen’s wider Fiduciary business. The IRM team is responsible for investment risk management, performance analytics, and asset valuation, supporting the Fiduciary business in its capacity as an informed and influential client on behalf of the Trustee. We provide independent performance and risk management, reporting, advice and analytics to all areas of Railpen, to both internal and external stakeholders, supporting Railpen’s core objective of achieving the secure and sustainable payment of members’ pensions.

The Role

  • Design innovations to key systems and processes
  • Performance reporting development
  • Value-added commentary, analysis and recommendations
  • Maintain ‘BAU’ reporting
  • Assist with the implementation of a 3rd party Investment Book of Record (IBOR)
  • Act as key point of contact for performance and investment queries
  • Implement development of key systems
  • Ensure accuracy of reporting and recommend improvements to existing controls

Candidate Profile

Prior systems knowledge is not a pre-requisite, rather we place more emphasis on hiring individuals that are collaborative, enthusiastic, can take ownership of tasks and execute them independently, and bring a diversity of ideas and opinion.

We would like to hear from performance professionals that have experience of designing investment analytics reports, have extensive knowledge of investment input data sets, have worked in a multi-asset environment, and have detailed knowledge of financial markets and instruments in both public and private assets.

Candidates must also be able to work with data flexibly. They should be able to build composites, have an excellent working knowledge of attribution models, and understand how to analyse the drivers of risk and performance.

Prior experience of implementing a performance system or dataset, and a working knowledge of SQL and Power-bi is preferred, but not essential.
