Job Description

About Octopus

The Octopus Group includes Octopus Investments, Octopus Renewable's, Octopus Real Estate,  Octopus Ventures, Octopus Labs. Our aim is to have an impact in everything we do, and to make a vital contribution to the UK economy by helping people, companies and institutions generate wealth. We call it ‘a brighter way’ changing today for a better tomorrow. And we’re always on the look-out for smart, talented people who share our values.

Role Summary

  • Clean and smart transport services are needed to de-carbonise the transport sector and improve air quality.
  • Octopus Transport is a start-up building a platform to enable professional operators of highly utilised vehicles to transition to zero and ultra-low emission vehicle fleets through investment in vehicles, infrastructure and data, using new business models.
  • The Transport team will build on the early investments in zero emission taxi and private hire fleets to also include buses, commercial vans and heavy goods vehicle fleets.
  • The candidate will need to take ownership of both customers and suppliers on a day-to-day basis, as well as contribute to the evolving strategy of the team in order to help us optimise our operational efficiency as we look to scale.

About the role

  • The team's current customer base is a combination of SME fleet owners and sole traders, but we are looking to expand the larger scale corporate fleets.
  • The candidate will need to be able to manage these customers directly as well as liaise with a few members of Octopus Electric Vehicles' sales team for taxis; whilst be able to adapt to the requirements of larger corporate fleets.
  • We currently work with multiple suppliers: from vehicle OEMs, energy infrastructure suppliers, and technology companies offering connected and autonomous vehicle solutions. There will be a need to manage these suppliers on a day to day basis to ensure that they are delivering to the level of service we expect.
  • Ownership of both incoming and outgoing billing is required, meaning close liaison with both Octopus Investments' Treasury and Specialist Finance teams.
  • Working with the Product Manager, Ed Stapleton, and working closely with Octopus Energy for Business, to continue to develop internal and external processes so that we can increase our operational efficiency and improve our levels of customer service.

About You

  • The candidate needs to be highly proactive; able to adapt quickly to the changing needs within our team; and be comfortable with uncertainty as both the mobility sector and our business model continues to evolve.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise.
  • Acceptance of need to 'get hands dirty' across all elements of the business is a must.
  • Understanding that both customers and suppliers will be key to the success of building this business, and therefore the ability to maximise the quality of their experience in dealing with us.
  • A constant focus on process improvement and automation through technology with a mindset on scaling. e.g. always thinking about what might break/slow us down if we scaled the size of our vehicle fleet by ten?

And to really stand out from the crowd:

  • Someone who is entrepreneurial and energetic, with a strong desire to build a new business and ready to face the challenges (both good and bad) that come with it. This is small and lean start-up and needs to be thought of in that way.
  • Previous operations experience with exposure to both customers and suppliers preferred.
  • A strong interest in innovation, sustainability and technology is key. An understanding of new vehicle and energy technology is helpful but not a prerequisite. Same for renewable energy and its supply.
