Connect to your opportunity

We are seeking a Manager to join Deloitte UK's market-leading Trade Compliance team in London, with agile and remote working supported. As part of the largest Big 4 Trade Compliance practice in Europe, you will manage and deliver export controls, sanctions, governance and assurance engagements across diverse industries, build effective client relationships and help organisations strengthen their risk and compliance capabilities through advisory, process, capability and technology improvements.

Acting as a trusted member of the client delivery team, you will combine strong trade compliance expertise with commercial awareness to deliver high-quality client outcomes, support the development of our services and contribute to the successful delivery of the team's growth priorities. Your responsibilities will include:

• Advisory and Solution Development:

o Identify and analyse client challenges and contribute to practical solutions through advisory support, process improvements, capability development and technology.

o Support business growth by monitoring market developments, contributing to trade compliance services and assisting with the development of client propositions and proposals.

o Undertake detailed export classification, licensing, sanctions and controls analysis, including risk assessments, audits and benchmarking against leading practice.

o Contribute to the design and implementation of controls, procedures and tools that strengthen clients' trade compliance capabilities.

• Project Leadership and Delivery:

o Manage defined workstreams and small project teams, typically comprising two to three people, ensuring high-quality delivery, client satisfaction and alignment with agreed objectives.

o Support engagement performance by managing day-to-day priorities, resources, budgets and risks, escalating significant matters appropriately and providing clear direction to team members.

o Apply sound judgement across both technical detail and broader client considerations to support the timely and effective completion of engagements.

• Client, Stakeholder Management and Team Development:

o Develop and manage effective stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, working collaboratively and establishing credibility as a source of practical trade compliance advice.

o Build trusted client relationships across diverse industries, identify opportunities to create additional value and tailor communications for audiences at different levels of seniority.

o Supervise, mentor and develop less-experienced colleagues, providing constructive feedback and fostering inclusion, accountability, continuous learning and consistently high standards of delivery.

Connect to your skills and professional experience

The ideal candidate will be adaptable, able to assimilate complex trade compliance risks and issues across diverse industries and develop insights into how these issues might affect different types of businesses.

You will be comfortable changing direction quickly as industry standards emerge or client priorities shift. You will take a pragmatic approach to trade compliance, centred on a solid understanding of risk, governance and compliance frameworks, enabling you to provide sound advice to clients, help them meet challenges, and manage risks effectively and efficiently.

Essential Skills & Experience:

• Trade Compliance Expertise and Client Advisory

o Strong specialist experience in export controls across relevant jurisdictions, including the UK, US and EU, with the ability to interpret regulatory developments and apply them to business models and operations.
Export controls must be the candidate's principal specialism; customs or logistics experience alone is insufficient.

o Experience advising clients on export controls, sanctions, governance and compliance risks, translating technical requirements into practical recommendations, controls, processes and technology-enabled solutions.

o Strong analytical judgement and problem-solving skills, with the adaptability to develop effective recommendations in complex, ambiguous and changing environments.

• Engagement Delivery, Commercial Awareness and Business Development

o Proven experience managing defined workstreams and small to medium-sized engagements, balancing detailed technical delivery with broader client considerations while ensuring quality, client satisfaction and adherence to agreed scope.

o Sound commercial and financial awareness, including experience supporting or managing engagement priorities, resources, budgets, forecasts and risks, with appropriate escalation of significant matters.

o Experience contributing to business development activities, including identifying client needs and opportunities, supporting the development of propositions and preparing proposals and other client materials.

o A proactive and pragmatic approach, with the ability to take ownership of assigned responsibilities, exercise sound judgement and deliver effectively under pressure.

• Team Leadership, Communication and Professionalism

o Experience supervising and developing small teams, typically comprising two to three people, providing clear direction, constructive feedback and support to less-experienced colleagues.

o An inclusive and collaborative team member, able to manage expectations, seek appropriate guidance and contribute positively to a diverse, global and agile working environment.

o A credible communicator in fluent English, able to build effective stakeholder relationships, tailor complex messages for audiences at different levels of seniority, and contribute confidently to presentations, workshops, reports and proposals.

o Commitment to high ethical and professional standards, with the flexibility to work across global and remote teams, travel to client sites and accommodate project requirements where necessary.

Desirable Attributes:

• Practical experience supporting the design and implementation of trade compliance governance, risk frameworks, controls and processes, including exposure to multi-jurisdictional export control programmes and other global jurisdictions such as Singapore, Japan or China.

• Experience using digital platforms and emerging technologies, including AI, to support compliance frameworks, improve operational efficiency and enable regulatory transformation.

• Experience managing small projects or workstreams and contributing to the development of new services, client propositions and proposals.

• Understanding of core engagement management processes, including client onboarding, contracting, budgeting and forecasting.

• Proficiency in additional languages relevant to key global markets (not essential).

This can mean that you and your "Immediate Family Members" are not permitted to hold certain financial interests (shares, funds, bonds etc.) with audit clients of the firm, and also prohibitions on certain employment relationships (e.g., you are not permitted to hold a secondary employment role with SEC audit clients of the firm whilst being employed by the firm).
