Challenging role heading up performance for an institutional investment manager with a very broad range of investments. Stakeholders include CRO, COO, CEO. This role would suit a hands-on manager with a strong technical background and excellent experience in project management and process improvement. Candidates ideally will have a highly numerate background and will have managed a team previously.

 Under the supervision of the Head of Performance the team has the following responsibilities:

  • Delivering on the investment performance reporting and analysis requirements of the investment manager and pension and of relevant oversight bodies
  • Working with external provider to develop informative performance reporting
  • Managing third party provider relationships
  • Day-to-day maintenance and production of reports
  • Responding to ad hoc performance-related requests and queries
  • Liaising with relevant parties to investigate and help resolve data queries

Day-to-day BAU work 

  • Lead and organise production, quality-checking and distribution of performance reports
  • Participate in BAU processes 
  • Ensure that team members are fully trained in key processes, rotation between team members is done and controls are performed
  • Responding to queries and requests for ad hoc analysis from members of the investment team, senior management.
  • Implement required changes to the benchmark and portfolio structures (inc. currency hedging and rebalancing policies etc.) 
  • Understand the accounting data used within the performance calculations

Project-based work may include 

  • Enhance reporting process – create more controlled performance reporting 
  • Continue building clear SLAs with stakeholders 
  • Continue strengthening controls around business logic that transforms accounting data 
  • Currency attribution – implementing Currency attribution for scheme attribution 
  • Performance attributions – country, sector, and other attributions that tie in with risk attributions 

Essential skills:

  • Experienced in all aspects of working in an investment performance team 
  • Experience in leading a team
  • Experience of process improvements in reporting and performance processes 
  • Experience of project management
  • Very good stakeholder management and communication skills 
  • In-depth understanding of the different performance measurement and attribution methodologies relating to equities, fixed income and currency etc. 
  • Understanding of requisite accounting data input 
  • Highly numerate background
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience of DC performance reporting
  • Knowledge of risks statistics and their relationship to performance measures
  • Experience of either Valuations work or private markets would also be viewed favourably
  • Experience in Pearl – the performance system from Ortec
  • Experience of pension fund performance measurement

The focus is on process improvement and achieving excellence. Whilst the Head of Performance will delegate many aspects, they should also expect to be involved with day- to-day production.
