Head of Data Science Engineering - 18 month fixed term contract
Who we're looking for

Data is the lifeblood of business decisions throughout Schroders. Underpinning good data science lies good data engineering, data governance, data management and data cataloguing in order to extract the most value from data with the least friction and risk. Larger-scale data science projects also benefit from the active involvement of engineering-focused individuals (Data Science Engineers), who would be managed under this role. This role leads projects to actively improve the quality and integrity of our data and tooling to maximise future resilience, scalability and re-usability.

You will report to the Head of Data Insights & Analytics. This will be a senior role within the team, working as a peer to the other team Heads and joining the management team of the DIU. As well as acting as an authority on the topic of data science engineering across the DIU, you will also be 'Capability Owner' for other teams that provide the DIU with its technological capabilities, including into the Technology teams that bring data into the organisation (Data Engineering) and the teams make available the technologies used doing data science work (Platform Engineering).
As part of the role you will be building relationships with other business teams and with our colleagues in the Technology function, ensuring that the various initiatives align and help each other.

We have around 5,000 people on six continents. And we've been around for over 200 years, but keep adapting as society and technology changes. What doesn't change is our commitment to helping our clients, and society, prosper.

The base

We moved into our new HQ in the City of London in 2018. We're close to our clients, in the heart of the UK's financial centre. And we have everything we need to work flexibly.

Schroders has strong support for flexible working practices, including modern technology for remote working. As such we offer a friendly and welcoming home for diverse and neuro-diverse individuals with various home/family arrangements.

What you'll do

• Gathering and communicating the platform, data and metadata needs of the Data Insights Unit and the wider community of data professionals across the business.
• Promoting good practice in data governance, data management, and data science engineering within the DIU. You will ensure that tools in support of these activities are fit for purpose, well-supported, and that team members know how and when to use them. You will also be helping others develop themselves, educating them and sharing your knowledge in good data science engineering and data management practices.
• Identifying datasets and refinement activities in the team that would benefit from being centralised and modelled/engineered to a higher standard for the benefit of other teams, i.e. you will be leading our work curating DIU data so that it is suitable for being made available to other teams.
• Acting as 'Capability Owner' for the teams of data engineers and platform engineers supporting the Data Insights Unit, shaping the direction and priorities in analytics system engineering and data pipelining activities. These teams perform most of the ETL and platform engineering that supports the work of the DIU and the wider network of embedded data scientists in other teams.
• General contribution to the wider goals of the DIU, including building relationships with internal customers and the wider data science and analytics community within Schroders. You will be an important voice within the Management Team of the DIU on matters relating to people, tactics and strategy.
• Act as the voice of the business owner in the DIU's move to the cloud. This involves analysis, feature prioritisation and co-ordination of all the teams involved. Working closely with our colleagues in global tech and external consultancies to ensure the project is being delivered to meet the DIU needs while balancing the wider impact of what we are doing.
