Head of Aircraft Performance and Transonic Aerodynamics
Over the past 80 years, the Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU) has researched, developed and published a large collection of design and calculation documents (known as Data Items) and software covering a number of engineering disciplines, but mostly within the aerospace sector. The current vacancy lies within the Transonic Aerodynamics Group, whose work is guided and monitored by a technical committee consisting of independent experts from industry, research and academia. Items are issued only after approval by the committee.
The work of ESDU lies somewhere between research and design, with the requirement that the final documents must serve the needs of practising engineers. Engineers at ESDU get the rare opportunity to investigate a whole range of different design problems in great depth. The work requires them to seek out all the available literature on a particular subject, understand it and then interpret it for use in the design process. The final product may be data, a method or a computer program, or some combination of these and frequently involves close collaboration on experimental and theoretical work with outside partners. The work is therefore both interesting and rewarding. Your Role
The successful Engineer will be required to undertake a leading role in and overall responsibility for the maintenance and expansion of the Data Items and software in the Transonic Aerodynamics Series and in the preparation of papers to be presented to the committee in order to obtain consensus for publication. Liaison with the committee will also involve convening meetings at agreed dates and developing an on-going work programme. About You
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a good honours degree (but is likely to have a higher degree) in aeronautical engineering or a closely related discipline, coupled with at least 15 years' experience obtained in an industrial or research organisation. Familiarity with use and interpretation of test data is essential, as is experience of applying and developing theoretical, semi-empirical and empirical techniques. Knowledge of a high-level computer programming language, preferably Fortran and/or MatLab, is desirable. A significant part of the work relies on successfully disseminating technical information and so a sound grasp of both spoken and written English is also essential. What we offer
