RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Primary responsibilities will include developing and implementing an institutional quality ESG program across the GSAM Private Real Estate portfolio. The person in the role will oversee all sustainability and ESG related activities for the real estate book , including strategy, project implementation and management, fundraising and performance/reporting. The ideal candidate will have subject matter expertise in real estate and environmental sustainability practices, but also have a deep know how in the social and governance value drivers.

Responsibilities
  • Formulate a best in class ESG strategy for the GSAM Private Real Estate portfolio, spanning multiple property types and geographies, geared towards maximizing profitability and impact
  • Drive the implementation of the strategy through (i) development of best practices, procedures and systems to scale implementation and (ii) project managing ongoing projects, working directly with asset managers and property managers
  • Review existing ESG frameworks and ensure/control their implementation across all RE investments
  • Develop and implement a number of high-impact ESG oriented initiatives across the real estate portfolio each year
  • Work closely with the acquisition and asset management teams to identify potential asset-specific ESG initiatives during the deal underwriting process
  • Create and maintain a process for tracking ESG projects across the real estate portfolio for the purpose of internal reporting and management, external reporting, and overall transparency and governance
  • Present internally and externally on GSAM's ESG initiatives to drive fundraising efforts and provide regular updates to the wider team
  • Develop and own third party vendor relationships related to ESG projects
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders such as Finance, Compliance and Legal to review existing agreements and embed appropriate ESG language, accounting for regional and sector-specific variances
  • Independently conduct ESG research including understanding competitor and client trends
  • Attend ESG conferences and setup internal knowledge sharing sessions to be sure the platform is fully up to speed on the latest ESG initiatives across the market
  • Provide education and training on specific ESG risks / opportunities to investment and asset management teams
Basic Qualifications
  • Strong academic background , with a Bachelors in Sustainability (or similar) preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of ESG experience with strong exposure to the real estate sector
  • Knowledge of the major European ESG certificates, and familiarity with widely-recognized sustainability reporting frameworks and best practices
  • Financial acumen and excellent understanding of the real estate sector
  • Ability to track progress of multiple projects simultaneously and work with multiple stakeholders to drive programs to completion
  • Solid analytical/logical mindset and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (clear, concise, and confident) with the ability to manage internal and external relationships
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, s elf-motivated and passion for sustainability
  • Ability to work both autonomously and in a team setting
  • Able to work under tight time constraints and extended hours as required, including business travel when necessary
  • Ability to periodically travel to other GSAM offices and portfolio assets
