Employee Communications Manager, Global Banking and Markets

Role Purpose

This role will support Global Banking and Markets' (GBM) Transformation function. This new function, formed in January 2018, was established to drive the pace and scale of change across GBM. This will include changing the way the business operates, changing mind-sets to drive an innovative, entrepreneurial culture and embracing new technology.

This role forms part of a communications team that supports GBM's Chief Operating Office (COO) organisation, comprising more than 12,000 employees globally. Under the guidance of the Senior Employee Communications Manager, GBM COO, the role holder will be responsible for the sourcing, planning and implementation of communications content and activity to support this new function.

This role presents an opportunity to be involved in some of the most exciting projects across GBM, including Big Data, Distributed Ledger Technology and Automation, and would suit a self-starter who is creative and recognises what makes great content.

Key Accountabilities

Role Context

  • Reports into the Senior Employee Communications Manager and is responsible for planning and executing communications to support transformation, big data and innovation across GBM
  • Responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy that aligns and supports the COO strategic objectives
  • The role has wide scope and requires independent action as well as collaboration across a number of teams and stakeholders
  • Responsible for providing a clear, authoritative and trusted voice globally to support the overall GBM narrative ensuring consistency across various channels

Impact on the Business

  • Develop compelling content and key messaging to help colleagues understand the transformation, big data and innovation agendas and their effect on the organisation
  • Source and help develop internal content from stakeholders, ensuring milestones and information are communicated to relevant audiences
  • Identify content opportunities for local and global channels internally as well as content to be shared more broadly across external channels, including press and social media

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Work with key stakeholders to identify key messaging and establish a narrative that supports their objectives
  • Provide guidance to stakeholders on what content is suitable for various audiences and push back where necessary
  • Collaborate with Communications team to ensure plans are aligned with global strategies
  • Work with media relations and social media colleagues on external messages to mitigate risks and maximise impact on external communications

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Track and measure the delivery and impact of communications activity
  • Meet and comply with HSBC Global Standards and governance framework
  • Use internal channels effectively to encourage two-way dialogue and reach across the Global Businesses
  • Keep up-to-date with latest employee communications research, techniques and approaches, and network externally with peers

Key challenges

  • Exercise judgment to ensure key messages are not lost in vast amounts of superfluous communications
  • Manage and prioritise information to ensure employees are not bombarded with messages
  • Form strong partnerships with key stakeholders in the Global Business and Chief Operating Office - you will need to be comfortable dealing with senior leaders
  • In-depth knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of communication mediums with the ability to assess what content will be most effective for each
  • Adjust quickly to a fast-changing environment, work to tight deadlines and be comfortable working with ambiguous

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications

  • A creative thinker, with ability to think "outside the box"
  • A proven track record in developing, managing and implementing multi-platform campaigns - internal and external
  • Practical knowledge and experience of creating content for Social Media channels
  • Experience working with emerging technologies and FinTechs
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work confidently and effectively with senior executives
  • A strong team player who can work collaboratively with peers
  • Excellent interpersonal, strategic planning and project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong knowledge of communication trends and best practice
  • Broad knowledge of financial services industry
