We are currently looking to hire an experienced director for our expanding equities business.

Department Description

At the centre of Fidelity's success is our approach to managing money, which the philosophy unchanged since we were founded. Our approach places first-hand, detailed research at the core of our decision making, ensuring that every security - whether equity or bond - is investigated in detail before being included in our funds. We subsequently build our funds from the bottom up, stock by stock, taking account of market trends but not being driven by them.

With close to 50 years' experience managing equity portfolios, we offer institutional clients a broad range of investment solutions across the risk/return spectrum. Our distinctive active strategies extend across geographies, sectors, investment objectives (capital growth vs. income), risk spectrum, investment styles and market cap. They include long-only as well as long/short strategies.

The Equity Investment department has responsibility for all retail and institutional funds managed by FIL. This responsibility includes managing equity portfolios in accordance with the stated investment objectives contained in the fund's prospectus, trust document or Investment Management Agreement (IMA). The Research department - 76 equity analysts provides analysis on companies, stocks and sectors, in order for Fund Managers to select stocks for their portfolios.

Purpose of your role

The purpose of the Director, Equities (DE) role is to manage the delivery of added value proprietary research to the fund managers in the interests of shareholders, primarily by leading the equity research function. The DE is a critical management function within Fidelity, jointly manging one of the largest buy-side equity research departments.

The DE role has evolved over recent years to also involve active fund management responsibilities along with overall direction, leadership and supervision of the production of investment research. The incumbent will be responsible for specific industry team(s) and manage a team of approximately 10-20 analysts and associates. They will also be a key lead in our talent development actions and will be solely responsible for our graduate and intern intake as well as managing our 'rising star' portfolio managers as they transition from a leading analyst to manage client money.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all FIL investment management Equity Research. Provide support and advice to the research team. Drive innovation within investment research.

  • Participate in senior management meetings for the Investment department.
  • Lead and assist as required with the recruitment of new research analysts and associates. Take a lead on the graduate and intern process working in conjunction with the Early Careers team.
  • Work with other DEs and the Head of Equities to coordinate sector rotations for the team and agree stock allocation to analyst coverage packages.
  • Work closely with fund managers to ensure analysts and PMs are performing satisfactorily. Actively communicate and appraise performance levels.
  • Coach the team on investment analysis, using his/her background to provide insight and guidance.
  • Work with other DEs and the Head of Equities on career development and talent management activities and provide input into the formal compensation reviews.
  • Actively manage money in a portfolio management capacity within the area of expertise.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for our rising stars in equities as they transition from analyst to PM roles.
  • Provide executive level briefings, communications, status and updates on operational goals, projects, plans and initiatives.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the provisions of Fidelity's Code of Ethics.
  • Be aware of and take responsibility for all regulatory, audit and risk issues relevant to investment management activities (e.g. Anti-Money Laundering and Training and Competence requirements).
  • Ensure adherence to FSA rules, specifically the Principles for Approval Persons, FSA COB Chp 7 dealing & managing and the Market Abuse Regime.

  • Professional qualification desirable.
  • In depth understanding of the Equity business as a whole.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of working in the financial services sector, with a specialist knowledge of Equities.
  • A comprehensive understanding of stock market actions and valuations and, ideally, previous experience of picking and valuing equities.
  • Strong project management and execution skills with a focus on delivery and results.
  • Previous people management responsibilities.
  • Previous experience of recruitment onboarding on talent, preferably in the early careers space.
  • Commercial acumen, energy & business vision.
  • Proven managerial and coaching experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well at all levels of the organisation.
  • Proven experience of identifying and implementing process improvements.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong and effective relationships with the team, peers and with other departments.
