Our client, the UK Investor Relations Society, is seeking a Chief Executive to lead the executive team and support the Chairman, the Board and the 10 voluntary Board Committees. The role will become vacant due to the upcoming retirement of the incumbent, John Gollifer. The Chief Executive will take the lead in the development of the society, its strategy, financials as well as all other aspects of managing the head office. The Chief Executive will ensure the provision of high quality services and events to benefit the >800 members of the IR Society on a day-to-day basis.

Role Overview 

The key responsibilities for the Chief Executive of the UK IR Society will be:

Ambassadorial

  • Acting as spokesperson for the Society, chairing events and presenting on behalf of the Society
  • Interfacing with sponsors and supporters of the Society
  • Understanding and responding to the needs of the membership and representing the views of the membership
  • Ensuring that the Society’s voice is recognised and heard across trade publications and other media sources. This includes liaising with regulatory authorities and other standard setting bodies to ensure that the views of the profession are properly represented
  • Developing relationships with other associations in adjacent industries domestically and internationally to continue to build the Society’s reputation and standing with similar bodies globally

Executive Management

  • Managing all aspects of the Society’s activities as delegated by the Chair and Board of Directors including management of the day-to-day running of the Society, operationally and to deliver the strategic objectives to budget
  • Reviewing and setting out monthly management accounts, budgets and statutory accounts
  • Maintaining and reviewing standard operating procedures for the Society – ensuring that the Society’s technical infrastructure is sound
  • Creating a positive working environment by mentoring and leading the members of the Executive team
  • Acting as a conduit between the Executive team and the Board – ensuring good governance and clarity of thought, quality debate and consistency of execution 

Strategy

  • Setting out the 3 year strategic plan for the IR Society and working with the Board and Executive team in its delivery 
  • Overseeing the organisational design and Human Resources plan to deliver the strategy
  • Thought leadership around issues impacting the industry to ensure the Society is a key participant in any private or public debates; issuing recommendations for members
  • Delivering the educational plan, domestically and internationally
  • Ensuring the efficient operation of the Committees – including setting the strategic and annual Agendas for each
  • Supporting an annual calendar of courses (c.40) and events (>30), including being a curator of content, moderator, speaker and trainer:
  • Overseeing the delivery of Professional Development programmes include: Certificate in Investor Relations; Diploma in Investor Relations; the DELIVER programme as well as options offered by other reciprocating associations
  • Organising the delivery of flagship events include the Annual Conference and Best Practice Awards Dinner
  • Overseeing the publication of the IR Society’s quarterly magazine, Informed 

Reporting Lines and Resources

The Chief Executive reports to the Chairman of the Society and liaises closely with the Board. The Chief Executive will be responsible for managing a team of ca. 7 employees.

The successful candidate must have

  • Demonstrable track record of leading a team or organisation with proven commercial ability
  • Clear understanding of IR profession either from a corporate perspective or from a capital markets or service provider perspective
  • Experience as a spokesperson/ambassador for an organisation – with the ability to build relationships with a broad set of stakeholders
  • Track record of successfully delivering against multiple strategic and financial targets
  • Strong delegation and people skills with experience of building and empowering high-performing teams
  • Track record of successfully delivering multi-event management
