Overview of the Department / Section
Global Markets Research provides our customers with authoritative and insightful commentary and analysis, focusing mainly on the foreign exchange market.
To fulfill our clients' global needs, GMR divisions are located in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, London and New York.
Our research analysts collaborate closely across all regions and provide our customers with timely information and analysis.

Main purpose of the role:

Responsible for gradually building a library of models for both FX and Rates that can be easily and increasingly used in the analysis presented in Global Market Research publications and presentation materials for MUFG clients. The aim of adding this role to the GMR team is to provide some more in-depth quantitative analysis on FX and rates for MUFG clients.Valuation models; Momentum Indicators; Sentiment Indicators; Trading Signals.

MUFG internal flows provide potential for added value for clients and this role will involve in-depth analysis of internal JPY fx flows in order to create potential trading signals and/or sentiment indicators for MUFG clients.

The role will involve some degree day-to-day research support of the Global Markets sales and trading business in FX and gradually in the rates space across EMEA and North America.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop quantitative analysis and strategies to incorporate into current FX research publications and then eventually to newly established Rates publications.
  • Ensure internal stakeholders are serviced through research marketing calls and client ad hoc requests (within compliance guidelines). Partake in regular internal calls updating Global Sales on conclusions from quantitative analysis – traders morning call; weekly meetings and provide timely analysis to market moving events.
  • After a period of time to partake in marketing , roadshows and client conference calls for both the corporate and FI client base (within compliance guidelines)
  • The role holder will work closely not just with the research team in London but will actively collaborate with analysts in Global Markets Research and other MUFG research entities globally by:

    - welcoming debate and discussion and enjoying having views challenged

    -  being open in sharing quantitative analysis work with MUFG colleagues and thriving in a team environment

    -  supporting other analysts by implementing quantitative analysis into currencies covered in different regions and for different asset class (e.g; oil, gold, credit)

Essential:

This role will require initiative and independent judgment to create original analysis, with an ability to respond quickly to internal staff requests and issues. There would be an expectation to make the necessary decisions to carry out responsibilities and meet primary goals and objectives, as well as evaluate and escalate more complex issues and/or problems.

Skills and experience:

Functional / Technical Competencies:

Essential:

  • Strong coding skills. Python proficient through Anaconda
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in financial modelling and detailed spreadsheet work.

Preferred:

  • Some experience in a similar financial market research role an advantage but not essential.
  • Sound knowledge of both FX and Rates and an understanding of how a quantitative perspective to the analysis already produced would add value.
  • An interest in Big Data analysis with a view to undertaking web text analysis to create sentiment indicators relevant for financial markets.

Education / Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Finance, Economics or data analytics related field of research

Personal requirements:

  • Excellent written, interpersonal & presentation skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines for sometimes long periods of time.
  • Ability to provide thought provoking but concise and easily consumable quantitative research.
