As an ABAS Assistant Manager, you will manage a portfolio of clients, managing teams, reviewing work, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. You will assist with complex financial reporting and client advisory tasks while supporting team development. Your role bridges operational delivery and managerial responsibilities to ensure client satisfaction.

Client Focus • Takes full responsibility for own clients and resource planning in relation to their client portfolio. Ensure assignments are diarised and delivered in line with client deadlines and expectations • Introduction to fee conversations with clients, with the support of senior management • Ensure up to date engagement terms are in place for all active client services, and revise accordingly for any changes in scope or service lines as and when changes arise • Develops a clear understanding of clients' business, challenges and risks sufficiently to brief more junior colleagues • Identify variations to initial engagement scope at an early stage of an assignment and propose approach and ad-hoc fees for any additional work for director/partner approval, so that full value can be recognised • Demonstrates opportunities to develop value added services for the client • Provides feedback to clients on progress and outcomes of jobs • Holds clients to account on the quality and timeliness of agreed deliverables. Technical Excellence • Has a sound knowledge of technical and professional standards, and can draw on this to enlighten colleagues and clients in specific and relevant areas • Confident in training others in technical knowledge • Be able to develop bid and pricing proposals for noncomplex work. Commitment • Undertakes line management responsibilities including performance reviews of appropriate junior colleagues • Supporting junior colleagues in developing action plans based on feedback received. Attention to Detail • Performs review of key areas of the assignment ensuring working papers and conclusions reached are presented well and justified • Takes pride in own work and takes personal responsibility for ensuring that the final product is accurate or high quality and presented well.
Key accountabilities
Decision Making • Confident in taking decisions within agreed remit • Deals with instances of colleagues failing to adopt core values and respect by either addressing or escalating to senior team members when aware • Suggests solutions to problems rather than waiting for suggestions from senior colleagues • Supporting managers in delegated aspects of team management such as sickness reporting and holiday approvals. Participate in the interview and selection process for new junior hires. Efficiency • Communicates effectively when scope or timescales need to change • Review work in progress (WIP) under own control and raise draft fees for approval considering stage of completion and work undertaken • Delivers work within agreed scope and timescales, meeting deadlines efficiently achieving desired recovery rates. Technical Skills
• Can advise clients of different corporation tax rates and bandings and apply to knowledge of company • Take ownership of deadlines under own portfolio • Able to review a transmittal letter prepared by a colleague • Able to provide support to a colleague in preparing a transmittal letter • To hold an efficient but effective planning discussion ahead of commencement and keep track of progress of budget • Able to explain variances in accounts demonstrating commercial awareness and client knowledge • Able to identify areas that should be brought to manager and partner attention accurately explaining in A25 • Ensures all review points are addressed prior to partner review • Can identify when technical support is required from tax service, clearly communicating on the issue and agreeing way forward • Is able to provide a high level concept explanation to clients on a broad range of subjects such as R&D relief, group loss relief and onward refer to Partner • Is able to prepare a medium size set of accounts for review • Able to review a non-complex VAT return • Understands limit of own knowledge and when to seeks support from VAT service line • Can perform bank covenant testing • Able to prepare medium risk tax returns consistently without error • Able to prepare medium risk tax returns without error • Able to advise on when updates are required to Companies House and rules surrounding issues such as, change of name, change of accounting reference date, appointment of director etc.
Qualifications
Holds an accountancy qualification or qualified by experience (e.g. ACA/ACCA/CA).
Essential Experience
It is expected that the above core and technical skills will have been developed through study alongside work experience in an accountancy practice.
