An exciting opportunity for experienced head of legal to join global bank - position can be based in Geneva or Zurich

Client:

Leading global bank with well-established and very strong presence for over the last 50 years in Switzerland. They offer sophisticated private banking , corporate & investment banking services as well as capital markets.  Swiss offices for their HNW and UHNW client base.  Globally, very strong on investment banking as well as corporate banking and private banking.  They offer unmatched global reach, coupled with a full range of portfolio management and investment advisory services, an array of structured lending and banking services. In this role, our client offers the support and backing of a leading global name and reputation, but combined with a very autonomous and meritocratic working environment, heading a small, successful and busy legal team.

Position:

Managing a team of 8, the Legal Team provides legal support to all  businesses operating in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Monaco (Private Bank, Corporate and Investment Bank, Markets, Treasury and Trade Services, Trust, etc.), with a focus on the Private Bank. Our client's private bank offers wealth management, investment and banking services to high net worth clients. The team further provides support to the other functions of the franchise and Company Secretary services to the bank.  Your role as Country Counsel involves daily interaction with the franchise management and the various Business Heads.

You will act as holistic country counsel, subject matter expert and leader on Private Banking legal and regulatory matters. 

The role will encompass the following elements, but not limited to:

  • Support the Country Management, Business Heads and Functions (Compliance, Finance, HR, AML, etc.) – analysis and monitoring of legal and regulatory developments as well as advising the business and operation and attending local and regional Management meetings and committees to provide guidance on relevant legal issues.
  • Support the Private Bank – including the provision of advice to the front & middle office on many matters; handling client queries and requests to include inheritance matters; reviewing and drafting legal documentation; coordination of litigation with external counsel and internal stakeholders; handling requests by, and coordinating actions with Swiss regulators and authorities.
  • Support the bank's entities globally – including advising the bank's entities on relevant local laws and regulations impacting entities abroad.

 


Profile:

As head of legal for Switzerland, Monaco & Liechenstein, based primarily out of either Geneva or Zurich, you will have to travel on occasion and  be part of a large organization but within a relatively small, close-knit office where you will have a very dedicated, long-standing team around you as well as quite a lot of freedom and autonomy.  At the same time you should be used to navigating your way around a large bank, where team work, professionalism and integrity are an integral part of the provision of legal services. The role provides an excellent opportunity within a leading private bank that offers a great deal of tailored solutions to very sophisticated clients, but also with the other financial services provided in country by the bank. The role further offers exposure to a great variety of legal matters and issues. 

 

  • Proven experience as a people manager
  • Minimum 10-15 years' relevant experience in Swiss private banking, not limited to, also with an international exposure/approach
  • Swiss qualified lawywer or equivalent; Swiss Bar a plus but not a must
  • Private banking expertise
  • Regulatory expertise especially in recent EU regulatory developments
  • Excellent technical and communication skills
  • Strong business and legal judgment and commercial attitude
  • Analytical and practical approach, ability to solve issues in pragmatic manner
  • Leadership and management skills, able to face-off with stakeholders (internal and external) at a local and global level
  • Fluent English.  French and/or German also needed (at least one)
  • Eligible to work in Switzerland - EU, Swiss or equivalent passport holders only or those in possession of a valid Swiss work permit
