The Investment Manager is responsible for monitoring and following up business development and Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) activities in the Financial Services (FS) entities in Emerging Asia. The mission is to have complete overview of the entity and ensure holistic execution of monitoring, follow-up and support activities towards the entity and Telenor’s Board members. The Investment Manager will function as a hub role who is an expert on each entity in the Telenor’s FS (TFS) portfolio and relevant markets, working in coordination with other TFS roles and Group Functions. The Investment Manager also serves as Board member.

Responsibilities and performance measures:

In order to monitor and support business development and GRC in the FS entities, the Investment Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Performance will be measured on business performance balanced with GRC in alignment with Telenor’s risk appetites
  • Ensure a holistic follow-up of each entity in the FS portfolio by working in coordination with other TFS roles and Group Functions
  • Manage relationships with investment partners and coordinate communications with the FS entities
  • Contribute to Performance Review meetings of TFS
  • Hold Board positions and support the Telenor Board members in FS entities through facilitation of Board meeting preparations and follow-up
  • Use in-depth knowledge of the local and global FS markets to support the Board and management in developing the entity’s strategic direction and exploiting strategic opportunities. This includes conducting market and industry analyses to understand market developments and regulatory environment and identify opportunities for future growth areas
  • Conduct business/financial reviews of the FS entities
  • Lead holistic business and risk assessments of FS entities with TFS team for relevant FS entity
  • Conduct active ownership of FS entities including (but not limited to):
    • Performance management, including target setting and follow-up of KPIs, through established governance structure
    • Stakeholder management towards investments partner, business partners and local authorities
    • Support on selected projects in the entities, based on need and importance to the business
    • Support and challenge management on strategic, operational, financial, risk and compliance topics
  • Contribute to capability and competence building in the FS entities
  • Approximately 50% on-the-ground presence to build and maintain relationships and understanding of the business, its risks and challenges (on site visits).
  • Support Group M&A in transaction processes
  • Establish and maintain a Financial Services industry network to secure access to expertise and talent as well as keeping up with the developing trends relevant to the businesses
  • Generate ideas for creating synergies across the FS entities and with Telenor telco business. Contribute to making Telenor visible as a FS industry player
  • Be a promoter of the Telenor Behaviours and Code of Conduct


The Investment Manager should have experience with following up business lines or companies from a top tier international banking and/or relevant highly respected financial services provider, and an understanding of the role and importance of GRC and tone from the top in a governance framework. Additionally the Investment Manager should have the ability to build relationships based on trust and transparency with management positions while at the same time be able to form independent points of view and challenge existing practices based on integrity and a sound knowledge of best practice.

Formal qualifications and educational requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Master degree in business/technology/IT studies or such
  • At least 7 to 10 years varied business experience within business development and GRC from an international top tier and/or recognised Banking / Financial Services, International Remittance, Mobile Payment services institutions
  • Background from top tier professional services firm providing advisory services to FS institutions is an advantage
  • Background as member of Boards or working with Boards is preferable, but not a requirement

Professional skills:

  • In-depth knowledge and proven record from business development with good understanding of FS markets and operations
  • Governance, Risk and Compliance profile from FS industry, with strong understanding of regulatory environments and risk picture in emerging economies
  • Experience from working in large global companies with many stakeholders
  • Experience from presenting to Boards and having dialogues at Board level
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, excellent in written & oral English
  • Understanding of risk management and compliance frameworks and practices
  • Understanding of the local cultures, regulatory environments and markets in which the FS entities operate
