Job Description

This Luxembourg based position, using discretion and judgment, will perform independent risk monitoring and management for all MFS collective investment products established and registered in Luxembourg (the "Luxembourg Funds") and separate accounts managed by MFS' Luxembourg affiliate ("MFS Luxembourg"). In addition to reporting to the Director of Investment Operations and Trading Analytics, this Conducting Officer position will provide regular reports and relevant data to the other MFS Luxembourg Conducting Officers, and the Board of Directors or similar bodies of each of the Luxembourg Funds.  This position will be expected to design, implement and maintain global risk management programs and frameworks for the Luxembourg Funds and MFS Luxembourg, for other jurisdictions, and act as a resource to consult on and fulfill quantitative tasks as needed.


  • Maintain  familiarity  with  the  global  legal  and  regulatory  requirements  governing  the  various  risk  programs  including,  but  not  limited  to,  Luxembourg  regulations  and  circulars  and  the  related  directives  and  guidelines  of  the  European  Union,  in  particular  the  guidance  documents  of  the  European  Securities  and  Markets  Authority  (ESMA);  as  well  as  the  regulations  and  guidelines  o f the  Hong  Kong  Securities  and  Futures  Commission;  the  Monetary  Authority  of  Singapore;  and  existing  andpending  rules  proposed  by the  US  Securities  and  Exchange  Commission.
  • Act as a point of contact between MFS Luxembourg and local regulators as the designated Risk Management Officer of MFS Luxembourg.
  • Develop  and  maintain  knowledge  of  global  financial  markets,  securitiesand  general  investment  themes  in  order  to  bring  an  informed  perspective  to  the  risk  management  processes.  Monitor  developments  and  initiatives  in  other  markets  and  jurisdictions  and  be  able  to  advise  senior  management  and  the  boards  on  potential  impacts  on  MFS  products  and  business.
  • Operates as the primary escalation point for Luxembourg operational business issues. Evaluates, provides solutions, and responds in a timely manner.
  • Advise  senior  management,  the  MFS  Funds  Board,  Luxembourg  Fund  Boards  and  MFS  Common  Board  on  a  regular  basis  of  the  adequacy  and  effectiveness  of  the  various  risk  programs;  recommend  responses  to  new  requirement  or  desirable  enhancements;  and,  where  needed,  identify  any  deficiencies  and  implement  mitigations.
  • Develop  and  maintain  documented  frameworks  for  each  applicable  riskprograms;  cooperate  with  the  Legal  Department  and  outside  counsels,  ensure  proper  and  timely  filing  of  all  required  risk  program  documents  and  reports;  develop  and  maintain  documented  risk  profiles  for  each  of  the  portfolios  within  the  scope  of  the  position's  responsibilities.
  • For  UCITS  funds,  establish  and  maintain  documented  risk   profiles  for  each of  the  portfolios  subject  to  one  or  more  of  the  relevant  risk  programs.
  • Provide liquidity risk management framework program, reporting and escalation as needed to the Luxembourg Funds Board, as required by local regulations.
  • Establish  and  maintain  internal  and,  where  appropriate  externally  provided  reports  and  services  that  will  be  monitored  to  ensure  that  the  risk  characteristics  of  all  portfolios  remain  consistent  with  their  documented  risk  profiles.E stablish  and  maintain  the  framework  of  controls  and  reviews  and  where  outside  services  or r eports  are  utilized,  ensure  that  annual  due  diligence  is  preformed   and  documented  for  senior  management   or  the  boards  as  needed
  • Oversee  the  efforts of a global staff of riskanalystswho  perform  the  da y to  day  reviews  and  control  processes.   Develop  and  advance  their  training  and  skill  sets,  ensuring  cross  training  and  their  ability  to  provide  backup  support  at  a  very  high  level  of  competence.  Hire,  train  and  manage  the  risk  analysts.  Challenge  and  coach the  global  investment  team on  risk  issues  serving  as  an  independent“ check  and  balance”  to  first line  risk  function.
  • Provide  related  support  to  MFS  senior  management  on  risk  related  and  quantitative  issues  for  MFS.  Establish  and  maintain  such  additional  controls  that  will  assist  the  Chief  Investment   Officer.  Presents  thorough,clear,  and  insightful  analysis.
  • Serve  as  a  member  or  attendee of  various  MFS  Committees    providingkey   input   in  areas  of  risk.
  • Assist  in  the  development,  review  and  implementation  of  Risk  related  policies  and  guidelines.
  • Serve  as  a  senior  resource  to  MFS on a varietyof quantitative andanalytic topics.  Apply  advanced  technical  knowledge  to  recommend  and  drive  change  to  implement  processes  to  fill  the  identified  gaps.
  • Provide  periodic  updates  on  the  monitoing  of  derivatives  to  the  US  funds  Board  of  Directors.
  • Develop  and  execute  complex  business  projects  and  direct  colleagues  on  such  projects.  Meet  established  project  milestones,  goals  and  objectives  within  established  time  frames  by  utilizing  a  disciplined  approach  to  delivering  on  time.  Lead  team  with  the  identification,  evaluation,  andresolution  of  potential  obstacles  which  may  have  an  impact  on  the  completion of  the  project.
  • Assume  additional  responsibilities  as  directed  by  senior  management.


  • Master's degree in a relevant field or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in the financial services industry with at least five years in a relevant role related to risk measurement and monitoring or related quantitative responsibilities, for instance a senior financial engineering position with risk or securities valuation attributes.
  • Familiarity with European regulatory guidance on risk management, including the "Value-at-Risk" method for calculating global exposure, a significant plus.
  • Familiarity with evolving CSSF, ESMA, and SEC requirements for Risk Management.
  • Proven quantitative skills particularly in the disciplines of risk, financial engineering and/or securities valuation.
  • Relevant industry certification such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Financial Risk Manager (FRM).
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, negotiating, written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in managing people or teams, particularly managing teams of individuals in global locations.
  • Knowledge of financial products, investment techniques and strategies.
  • In depth knowledge of derivatives including fixed income, equity and commodity derivatives.
  • Ability to function with a very high degree of independence.
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple workflows and projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Strong communications skills required as well as the ability to work well with a variety of people at all levels of the company, Boards of various funds and local regulators; and exceptional attention to detail. Effective influencing, collaboration, relationship management, project management and partnering skills.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of financial markets, securities and general investment themes in order to bring an informed perspective to the risk management processes.
