Gas & Power Trader | Ireland

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Shift Gas & Power Trader to join their shift trading team, responsible for delivering optimisation, risk management, and wholesale market access services across a growing fleet of generation assets operating within the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the commercial optimisation and trading of a diverse thermal generation portfolio, including CCGT and OCGT assets, operating within the Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM).

Reporting to the Trading Manager, the trader will be responsible for executing and developing trading strategies across power, gas, and carbon markets, optimising plant dispatch and maximising portfolio profitability through active participation in wholesale energy markets.

This role offers the opportunity to work at the heart of one of Ireland's most active thermal generation portfolios while contributing to strategic trading initiatives and broader commercial projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute and optimise trading strategies across the I-SEM power markets.
• Prepare and submit ex-ante market bids for multiple thermal generation assets.
• Optimise balancing market positions to maximise within-day opportunities and generation margins.
• Trade within-day power and gas markets to manage portfolio positions and minimise balancing exposure.
• Manage daily gas capacity positions, reducing overrun costs and identifying secondary trading opportunities.
• Monitor, manage, and trade carbon positions in accordance with internal risk policies and procedures.
• Develop and implement short-term trading strategies across ex-ante and balancing markets to maximise asset profitability.
• Optimise thermal generation dispatch to maximise gross margin and overall plant P&L.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant power and gas licence obligations, network codes, and market regulations.
• Maintain strong communication with network operators, market operators, and industry stakeholders.
• Produce market commentary, trading reports, and performance analysis for management and senior stakeholders.
• Support wider commercial and analytical projects across the trading function.
• Contribute to monthly performance reporting and strategic portfolio reviews.

Candidate Profile

✔ Previous experience within Gas & Power Trading.
✔ Strong understanding of the Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM).
✔ Experience trading and optimising thermal generation assets.
✔ Exposure to gas, power, carbon and wider commodity markets.
✔ Ability to identify and execute trading opportunities across spot, balancing and short-term markets.
✔ Strong commercial mindset with an understanding of risk and portfolio management principles.
✔ Ability to interpret market fundamentals and translate them into actionable trading strategies.
✔ Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
✔ Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities.
✔ Self-starter with the ability to work independently in fast-paced market environments.
