The Investment Science Analyst at Wellington Management will use research data and analytics (proprietary and publicly available) to answer a wide range of investment-related questions. Wellington recognizes that applying these big data analytics is critical in making better investment decisions and has invested heavily in providing the needed tools to its teams. This is a position to work directly with a Hong Kong-based fund manager responsible for a substantial global emerging markets portfolio and his team. In addition, they will also work closely with Wellington's investment science team based in Boston.
This portfolio is constructed as "bottom up" or by using fundamental analysis to select individual securities around the globe. The investment process requires a deep understanding of the fundamentals of the companies held, potential new investments and the market in general. We believe that applying research data and analytics to company data yield unique and differentiated insights and will be additive to the portfolio team's already successful process.
The investment data analyst's role will be to leverage the firm's data and IT resources by using the latest statistical and programming methods to improve investment decision-making. Because of the vast (and rapidly growing) amount of data available and nearly limitless range of questions that must be answered, the individual in this position will need to not only possess the required statistical/mathematical/programming skills but also a proven ability to solve difficult problems using intuition and imagination.
Therefore, the ideal candidate will be able to work on a variety of diverse projects at the same time, applying different methods and tools where appropriate. A portion of the analyst's additional compensation will be tied to investment results of the portfolio.
The successful candidate will possess theoretical or working knowledge of markets. Interest in investment management, desire to work in a team-based and collaborative environment, and an analytical/problem-solving orientation are required. Sound business judgment and strong written and oral communication skills are also a must. Candidates should possess a demonstrated record of achievement, capacity for differentiated thinking, strong work ethic, teamwork, and the willingness to work with others.
Additional qualifications for this role include:
- O to 3 years of work experience
- Previous experience in analyzing data to generate investment ideas is a plus
- Passion and interest in working with deep fundamental teams and multidisciplinary scientists
- Degree qualified with a strong academic background. Masters would be considered beneficial
- Enthusiastic and able to work under pressure in a fast paced environment
- Intellectually curious with the ability to think creatively when solving difficult questions
- CFA charter or progress towards a CFA is a plus
- Fluency in written and spoken Mandarin is a must
- Strong programming skills in Python, R, C#/C++/Java
