Director, Head of APAC Research, BlackRock Sustainable Investing

About this role

The role:

Reporting to the APAC Co-Head of BlackRock Sustainable Investing and working closely with both the Global Head of Research for Sustainable Investments and Global Head of Climate Research, this role and associated function will provide the critical research foundation which underpins the key pillars of the APAC BSI strategy. These pillars include client engagement and commercialization, product innovation and integration, and policy and regulation.

Its primary responsibility will be the production of thought leadership content and narrative on top-down sustainability-related topics and thematics and their relevance to investment opportunities and risks. The aim is to ensure resonance of BlackRock's global sustainability narrative with our APAC stakeholder base. Additionally, the team will work to develop quantitative and fundamental APAC ESG insights that can be integrated into global and APAC sustainable product development.

Key Responsbilities:
  • Drive the research agenda for BSI in APAC, and establish BlackRock as the leading sustainability investing research house in Asia Pacific through high quality thought leadership production.
  • Contribute towards regional and global BSI leadership teams.
  • Act as the key conduit between the APAC BSI team and global BSI research teams in bringing the global research agenda and narrative to a locally relevant and useful context. Additionally, advocate for and bring insights on the unique APAC context into the global BSI research agenda & narrative.
  • Lead and collaborate with the APAC Co-Heads of BSI and relevant stakeholders in BII on the research agenda, with a focus on addressing APAC-specific sustainability challenges with tangible commercial outcomes.
  • Represent and establish the firm as a leading voice and thinker on sustainability. Synthesize and communicate trends, developments, and insights with clients, media, policymakers, financial firms, corporates, and other sustainability stakeholders. Do the same within the firm to increase awareness and knowledge of sustainability.
  • Manage a local team of quantitative and qualitative researchers, in line with the expansion of our APAC sustainable investing business.
  • Partner with the BSI APAC Client pillar and the APAC Marketing function on the development and roll-out of marketing and educational initiatives across APAC.
  • Align and collaborate with relevant data analytics teams in Aladdin and RQA, as well as external industry initiatives, to collaborate in addressing unique challenges around data quality, coverage and availability in APAC.
  • Collaborate with the other APAC BSI pillars on cross-functional projects where appropriate, such as product development and policy engagement.

  • 10-15 years relevant experience per below.
  • Substantial external credibility and prior experience/ subject matter expertise is essential. Technical expertise in climate change in particular is valuable
  • This does not necessarily need to be direct investment management experience - we will consider a diverse range of backgrounds, including for example academia, consultancy, law, politics, journalism, NGOs. However, the individual must have strong commercial acumen and deep understanding of and interest in the connection between sustainability and investment outcomes.
  • Strong writing, technical research and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to identify relevant research topics and build a research pipeline
  • Build support for and articulate BlackRock viewpoints on complex issues
  • Self-motivated individual, with the ability to think strategically and drive new business.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to build relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand complex quantitative and qualitative problems, and articulate and present research findings in an easily understandable, commercial way.
  • Team player; ability to manage projects through collaboration with cross-disciplinary global teams.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills and knowledge of ESG data providers essential. Experience with coding logic and programming an advantage.
  • People leadership experience preferred.
