Large buy side client is looking to attract a Financial Valuation Specialist for their Markets division

The Markets division has a global mandate for a wide range of business;

  • starting with capital market solutions deploying their own hedging platform
  • continuing with special structures of Life reinsurance and
  • not ending with Epidemic Risk Solutions for both Life and Nonlife risks

The environment is both diverse and challenging!

Broad range of tasks:

The section is responsible for a broad range of tasks around monitoring and reporting of this business, with divisional interfaces to the group’s Risk Management, Reserving and Controlling divisions as well as the legal risk carrier and others.

Current challenges do also include the introduction of the standards IFRS 17 and IFRS 9, the latter of which is applicable to the larger part of their portfolio.

Content is always different:

Reporting duties are recurring, but the content is always different due to a variety of reasons and effects. Further to these duties, they shape their future by ultimately striving for the highest possible automation of their processes. A high degree of automation is required to scale up their business and, in the end, to enable the division to succeed with its ambition.

Note: Throughout this hiring process, they are also considering changes in the internal task allocation. The tasks mentioned below describe some of the team’s general tasks, and the concrete allocation of challenges to the new employer of the open position will be determined throughout the hiring process. Depending on your background and interest, there is absolute flexibility to consider your interests in the final decision and the final task allocation!

Reporting line:

You will report to the Chief Actuary and Head of Monitoring & Reporting (Team leader)

Soft Skills:

The successful candidate will possess a Team player mentality, “it all starts with the right attitude”..

A self-motivated number cruncher with a passion for coding, interested in working in a multinational and interdisciplinary team.

Growth Path:

Reporting is their main task, but you can easily jump on other projects in many different areas.

They do hedging and non-hedging work, all monitored which will be merged in a broad range of work – hence this will give you a possibility to work on other projects.

Financial Valuation Specialist in its role

Principal Duties:

  • A variety of reporting tasks; as per above, this could start with the monitoring of the capital market-dependent business in the hedging platform, continue with work around the implementation of IFRS 9/17, regular Solvency II reporting, creation of reports for the senior management / the risk carrier, or to deal with topics from the interfaces to reserving, controlling and annual planning
  • Driving automation further, i.e. detect and close gaps by fixing existing or developing new code (they essentially use R & SQL)
  • Contributing to other tasks of the team, such as the overarching quality assurance and processes around internal and external audit

Principal Competencies:

  • University degree in (actuarial/finance) mathematics, physics or informatics; ongoing or completed training for fellowship in an actuarial society is considered an asset
  • Very good skills in R (e.g., the data.table package) & SQL, with JAVA being an advantage
  • At least 3 years of experience in (re-)insurance (Life or Nonlife), investment banking, consultancy or in related areas, ideally with some knowledge in valuation models, IFRS 9/17 and / or solvency standards
  • Experience in project work and, ideally, project management
  • Excellent analytical and conceptual skills
  • Fluent business English; German would be considered an advantage
