EBRD has invested more than €22 billion in over 1,100 sustainable energy projects since the Sustainable Energy Initiative commenced in 2006. With the launch of the Green Economy Transition approach in 2016, the Sector Teams and Country Teams in collaboration with the Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (EECC) work on further mainstreaming investments in climate change mitigation and adaptation (renewable energy, energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency and waste minimisation) throughout the Bank's operations and aim to reach 40% of the annual business volume by 2020.

The Principal GET (Green Economy Transition) Banker is competent in undertaking all tasks related to, and understands all aspects of project development and implementation, for all types of investment instruments offered by the Bank under the GET approach and will primarily be focused on GET project origination, pipeline development and project structuring.

Apart from origination and pipeline development, the Principal GET Banker's role also includes elements of market intelligence and country diagnostics, governmental stakeholders' engagement, client management and policy dialogue. They will take on responsibility for a number of new business initiatives supporting innovation and uptake of green technologies, with a particular focus on corporate clients and infrastructure projects.

The Principal Banker will act both as a senior member of a project team or as an operation leader (typically on less complex transactions than an Associate Director, Senior Banker).  The Principal Banker, their role as an operation leader, is expected to take responsibility for effective leadership of their project team/s, supervision of junior banking staff, while contributing to their coaching and providing mentoring assistance, as required.


Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Structuring and Execution

Work as a senior project team member with more experienced operation leaders on complex GET transactions, contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution, including supporting the operation leader with the management of the project team;
* As an operation leader: Lead structuring, negotiation (including review of legal documentation) and the execution of transactions, working with clients, authorities, consultants and internal units;
* Manage the resources and the work load of the project teams under his/her supervision;
* Oversee the project due diligence process ensuring it meets the Bank's standards;
Ensure quality and appropriateness of TC assistance components which support the investments or contribute to policy dialogue initiatives;

* Ensure that all transactions within his/her responsibility are completed within the specified time frames to a high standard (including all internal memoranda and Board reports) and in line with the policies, procedures and objectives of the Bank.

Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Reporting

* As a senior project team member perform all such tasks as may be assigned by the operation leader and provide constructive portfolio monitoring advice, guidance and supervision to more junior members of the project team.
* As operation leader: Take overall responsibility for the effective monitoring of all projects within his/her responsibility, including verifying the quality of regular monitoring reports; taking the lead in maintaining or supervising the management of client relationships; actively managing the resolution of any implementation/monitoring issues in cooperation with relevant Portfolio Managers; managing and supervising more junior bankers who assist in portfolio monitoring;
* Supervise implementation and monitoring of, and reporting on, relevant TC assignments to ensure their compliance with donor reporting requirements, operational objectives and that all reports are of a high quality;
* Take responsibility for ensuring timely notification of any critical portfolio issues to the relevant Portfolio Manager and/or Management, ensuring availability of adequate data and information for the Portfolio Manager and/or Management to be able to take timely decisions.


Market Intelligence, GET Business Planning and Business Development

* Responsible for providing market intelligence about the country and sectors to support identification of gaps and opportunities and intervention areas where EBRD can make a meaningful intervention using policy dialogue, technical assistance and financing instruments to support projects in alignment with the Bank' transition impact and additionality mandates.
* Contribute to the preparation of ‘Country Diagnostics' by providing inter alia statistical analysis and benchmarking, stakeholders' analysis, mapping of the competitive environment and conducting reviews of countries' mitigation and adaptation commitments. 
* Working together with EECC, identify and define opportunities for maximising the Bank's impact and develop annual GET work plans for the country comprising of operational and policy dialogue activities designed to deliver the Bank's GET business in the country.
* Ensure, on a best effort basis, using professional judgement and market understanding that the Bank is pursuing the appropriate mix of projects and policy opportunities and that Country/Sector Teams achieve or exceed their GET targets in alignment with the country work plans.
* Assist with marketing and GET business development efforts in the relevant sectors to build reputable market contacts in order to develop a broad deal flow and cross selling of the Bank's competencies;
* Assist with the critical screening of project proposal flow that is generated through business development efforts, liaising with other colleagues and teams within the Bank to identify sound and executable investments that meet the mandate of the Bank.
As a project team member, influence clients in order to structure and deliver GET element of banking transactions to ensure that GET is mainstreamed/maximised in the projects financed by EBRD.


Policy Dialogue

* In cooperation with EECC and other relevant units within the Bank as well as the country team (as applicable), contribute in a leading or support function to policy dialogue activities with local authorities and industry associations to improve the investment climate and strengthen the EBRD impact in the areas of green innovation, resource efficiency and waste minimisation, buildings energy efficiency, waste and energy management etc.

* Assist in providing necessary support, in the form of relevant information or documentation or meeting participation, towards efforts to procure grants and technical cooperation funds to complement investment projects or required as part of policy dialogue efforts.



Staff Management

* Assist in recruiting, training, coaching and mentoring junior bankers, in coordination with the team Director and Associate Directors, Senior Bankers, involving them in all aspects of the project cycle (appraisal, execution, implementation, monitoring and business development), ensuring adequate quality of project work  and appropriate work load distribution amongst the project team members; contribute to  their professional and competency development;
Develop productive relationships within the organisation to able to work effectively in a country/sector matrix structure and in a multi-cultural working environment.
The responsibilities of the Principal Banker are designed to allow for the development of transaction expertise and expansion of responsibilities, leading to assuming the role of Senior Banker.


Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

• Significant relevant financial industry experience from an investment or commercial bank, private equity firm, asset management firm, or auditing/financial consulting firm operating to international standards.
• Practical experience of participating in and leading complex transactions through the full project life cycle.
• Strong quantitative/numerical skills are critical with the ability to interpret financial information and to design and use financial models
• Relevant degree from a leading university in the country of education in either a technical discipline, (e.g., engineering, environment, science), or business management, economics or finance. 
• Thorough experience of technical and institutional aspects of industrial and municipal resource efficiency investments and financial structuring of projects in the aforementioned sectors. 
• Relevant banking, commercial or consulting experience, gained from a reputable bank, industrial enterprise or advisory/consultancy firm, with a demonstrable track record of successful energy and resource efficiency projects.
• A combination of technical and commercial skills is required. Candidates who combine a technical and financial background, with additional experience in related EECC projects will be of particular interest.
• Sound understanding of business and finance principles (including notions of corporate credit analysis).
• Computer literacy conversant with Microsoft Office and spread sheet packages including financial analysis and modelling modules.
• Ability to operate consistently within business guidelines and proven track record in managing consultants and related assignments.
• Experience in emerging markets, including Southern and Eastern Mediterranean is advantageous. Excellent written/oral communication skills in English are essential.
• Fluency in Arabic would be an advantage.
• Ethics and work sensitively in multicultural environments, building effective working relations with clients and colleagues.
• Self-motivated, ability to plan and organise work with limited supervision in a logical and efficient manner and towards tight deadlines.
