Position Description

Morgan Stanley’s Operational Risk Department (ORD) is seeking a strong quantitative background Data Scientist (Associate), based in Shanghai, China. This data scientist will be tasked with processing and examining unstructured data, especially text data, to glean key business insights using Natural Language Processing and machine learning techniques.

Job Description

The individual will play a critical strategic role in supporting the establishment and development of a data science taskforce out of Shanghai for Global ORD. Primary responsibilities would include but are not limited to:

  • Collecting large amounts of unruly data, both numerical and text, and transforming it into a more usable format
  • Solving business-related problems using data-driven techniques
  • Analyze order and patterns in data, as well as spotting trends that can help mitigate risk
  • Perform daily qualitative review of risk data including internal/external incidents and Issues to identify risk themes and data quality issues
  • Extracting and analyzing various operational risk data, such as incidents, metrics, issues and actions, scenarios, key controls and Risk Control Self Assessments (RCSA)
  • Presenting findings and analysis to support senior coverage teams’ decision making process




Qualifications:



Desired skills

  • 5+ years of experience working as a data analyst/scientist
  • Ph.D. from a quantitative discipline; Master with solid experience on natural language processing and/or text analytics machine learning will also be considered
  • Strong project management skills with experience working on large global or multi-divisional or cross-functional projects
  • Strong technical skills with R, Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau a plus
  • Ability to perform detailed analysis and present findings with limited guidance
  • Ability to multi-task with attention to detail
  • Able to explain complex data stories to senior audience using plain language without jargons
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills in English
