The Role: Senior Analyst, China Oil Markets

The Location: Beijing, China

The Team: This role is part of Asia Analytics Team, which is growing and part of S&P Platts Analytics. The team is based in Singapore with offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, and interacts actively with many other groups such as oil, petrochemicals, biofuels, natural gas/LNG, coal and power.

The Impact: This position will have substantial responsibilities of research in elements affecting the China oil market (petroleum product demand, supply, trade and prices, energy policies concerning the petroleum sector) in the Asia and global contexts, and presenting results in both written reports and client-facing interactions. The position will also have business development and client retention responsibilities in China.

  • Forecast and track crude quotas and trends in crude qualities and imports
  • Follow closely independents and SOE refinery runs, economics and utilization
  • Forecast and follow product exports understanding economics
  • Track all China Stocks and Trade Flows using URSA and cFlow
  • Provide refinery margins and track crude values into China
  • Track new refinery startups and impact on yield especially petrochemicals
  • Track trends in demand
  • Maintain, improve, and develop inputs and outputs for China oil markets analysis, working closely with other analytical staff within Asia Analytics and Platts Analytics at large
  • Prepare written monthly and ad hoc reports and forecasts
  • Support Platts Analytics' wider organization, including Petrochemicals, Biofuels, Gas, Power and Emissions/Clean Energy
  • Interact with clients to answer questions and present outlooks

What We're Looking for:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum five years of experience in energy industry consulting, investment banking, equity research or equivalent professional experience
  • Excellent communication skills and in oral and written English - our working language. Must be able to effectively present forecasts and supporting materials to clients in regular reports, phone calls, emails, and web/live conferences
  • Fluent in Mandarin for reading, writing and speaking
  • Innovative and strong problem-solving skills to streamline processes and identify and implement improvements
  • Strong attention to details
  • Ability to assess impact of policy issues influencing oil markets focusing on China.
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in economics, business administration, engineering, or similar field, with experience in energy markets
  • Strong skills at data mining and data visualization with available software programs
  • Expert in Microsoft Excel. At ease using features such as pivot tables, matrix formulas and other advanced Excel functionality
  • Successful candidates will possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit, be highly self-directed and be able to work well under tight deadlines
  • Understand Refinery Economics, Petrochemicals and Crude Qualities

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience covering the Chinese oil markets in the regional (Asia) and global contexts
  • Understanding of economics/econometrics/refining modeling (LPs)
  • Skills in Python
