Senior Software Development Engineer
Are you interested in building hyper-scale services in the cloud?

Do you want to work with state-of-the-art technologies on a fun, diverse, and rapidly growing team that cares about people just as much as products?

In this role, you'll collaborate with other team members to investigate design approaches, prototype new technology and evaluate technical feasibility. You'll write high quality distributed system software and drive engineering best practices. Working in an Agile/Scrum environment you'll establish architectural principles and mentor team members.

Two key areas of Compute Platforms are hiring software engineering right now:

The Databases & Platforms teams are building some of our fastest growing core services, including RDS, Aurora, MySQL, MariaDB, Redshift and Builder Tools. They're solving interesting problems in distributed systems, concurrency, database internals, caching, query optimization, languages, and performance engineering. They're improving the technologies that orchestrate and manage Redshift clusters globally for a petabyte-scale data warehouse.

The Builder Tools teams create software that enables the thousands of Amazon developers across the globe to build scalable, reliable software. The products that Builder Tools owns enable automated software deployments, continuous testing and load testing at true Amazon scale. These are the tools that help Amazon and AWS to host well-tested, reliable services at a scale that is rarely seen in the industry.

The teams operate much like a start-up in that we try to keep them small, but leverage all the resources and stability of being the largest cloud provider. This dynamic creates a fast-paced, innovative stimulating environment with a lot of ownership, collaboration, and little red tape.

• Write high quality distributed system software and perform peer code-reviews
• Perform development and maintenance of key system features
• Drive best practices and engineering excellence
• Provide technical direction to the team and identify areas of focus

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3+ years of experience working with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis, and object-oriented software design in Linux/Unix environments
• Proficiency with one or more general purpose programming languages including but not limited to: Python, Java, Typescript, Scala, Golang, C++ or C#

• Knowledge of best practices for the full software development life cycle; including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
• Track record of designing and building complex software systems and successfully delivering them to customers
• Exposure to large-scale distributed storage and database systems (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, Graph Databases)
• Experience communicating with peers, technical teams, and senior management to collect requirements & describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Experience mentoring junior engineers to improve their skills, efficiency and productivity, and influencing systems engineering practices within the team
• Experience architecting/deploying/operating solutions built on AWS and experience with services such as RDS, EC2, Dynamo DB, CloudWatch.
• Interest in the general Internet peering/transit ecosystem or exposure to a networking environment
