Catastrophe Risk Analyst

Munich Re Sydney, Australia
Catastrophe Risk Analyst
Since its formation as a stand-alone division of Munich Re in 2023, Munich Re Specialty (MRS) has the ambition to become a profitable top-10 global primary Specialty insurer. Complementing an already strong presence in the UK and the US, Munich Re Specialty - Global Markets (MRS-GM) has been tasked with expanding our primary Specialty business in continental Europe and APAC. We have begun the European expansion journey, and are now ready to launch our expansion in APAC, starting with Australia.

This role will provide exposure management and catastrophe risk analytical support to the Exposure Management and Underwriting teams, delivering high-quality risk insights to support underwriting and portfolio management decisions.

The role is responsible for the collection, assessment, analysis and reporting of exposure management information, including both regular reporting and ad hoc analytical support for the Syndicate and its international distribution network.

Your Role

  • Analyse and manage large and complex datasets, utilising catastrophe and accumulation modelling tools to assess, quantify and communicate catastrophe and accumulation risk across the portfolio.
  • Support the development and enhancement of data ingestion, transformation and quality control processes to improve the efficiency and accuracy of catastrophe modelling workflows.
  • Interpret, synthesise and present catastrophe model outputs to underwriting teams, including analysis of portfolio changes, model movements and key risk drivers.
  • Operate catastrophe modelling platforms and interrogate exposure and results databases using SQL and other analytical tools.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Exposure Management practices through process optimisation, automation and the development of new analytical capabilities.
  • Support the design and implementation of operational workflows, controls and governance processes for the APAC Exposure Management function.
  • Assist the Head of Exposure Management in building and developing a high-performing Exposure Management team to support future regional growth.
  • Develop innovative analytical solutions to help underwriting teams better understand, quantify and manage catastrophe risk.
  • Assess and monitor exposures throughout the underwriting lifecycle, from data receipt and validation through to modelling, analysis and reporting.
  • Support post-event analytics and loss estimation activities for both natural and non-natural catastrophe events.
  • Assist in the validation, benchmarking and review of third-party catastrophe models and associated modelling assumptions.
  • Collaborate effectively with stakeholders across multiple functions, geographies and time zones to support the successful establishment and ongoing operation of the APAC Exposure Management capability.

Your Profile

  • 2+ years' experience in a catastrophe risk, exposure management, actuarial or related analytical role.
  • Highly adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment, with the ability to take ownership, establish new processes and contribute to the development of a growing function.
  • Strong analytical and data manipulation skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate complex datasets and modelling results.
  • Experience with catastrophe modelling platforms, preferably Moody's RMS solutions, including RiskLink, Risk Modeller, IRP, UWIQ and/or EIQ.
  • Experience with alternative catastrophe modelling platforms would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with APRA reporting requirements and catastrophe risk management frameworks is desirable.
  • Experience supporting catastrophe event response activities, hazard monitoring and post-event reporting.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Microsoft Excel; experience with Python, R, Power BI or similar analytical or programming tools would be beneficial.
  • Degree in a quantitative, scientific or hazard-related discipline, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Meteorology, Seismology, Atmospheric Science, Geography or Environmental Science. Equivalent industry experience will also be considered.

We see DEI as a business imperative, helping us to attract, grow and inspire a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workforce that better enable us to serve our customers, investors, and communities. Globally, we strive to build balanced teams across all aspects of difference. If you are interested in the role and believe you could contribute, we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly match every qualification.
