The Company: 

Is a Top-Tier International Investment Bank head-quartered in Sydney. They have recently embarked on a large scale, bank-wide (5 year) Digital Transformation Initiative which will be driven from Australia.

The Area:
You will join the highly business-facing buy-side Technology team who provide a suite of vendor-based and in house built solutions to Portfolio Managers, Quantitative Analysts and Risk Managers that allow them to view, analyse, price and evaluate a range of financial instruments on behalf of their clients - which include government agencies, large institutions and high net worth individuals. 

The Project & Role Responsibilities:
The Digital Transformation Initiative is made up of 5 critical areas:

Simplification = Consolidating similar systems that do the same thing 
Automation = eradicating needless manual processes wherever possible
Digitisation = modernising all of their client facing front ends (new responsive technologies) 
Data = utilising big data tools for more efficient and effective reporting & analytics 

The role available will focus on the implementation of big data tools across this niche area of the firm. The Bank have recently secured licences for a range of new technologies for use across the organisation.  The idea is to to make use of these pre-existing technologies (Hadoop/Spark/NoSQL/AWS etc.) and drive a project to move away from the current technology stack to something more up to date and fit for purpose. 

Currently the portfolio managers and quants use a range of VBA/Java & Python/SQL solutions to price, calculate risk and trade products for their portfolios. There is a small team of Java/Python Developers split between Sydney, London and New York, however they do not have the knowledge in-house to be able to set the technology road map and the adoption of these new technologies. 
We are looking for someone with Big Data (Hadoop/Spark) technology exposure and a strong background in Java who can come in This person will be tasked with driving the adoption of these next-generation applications which will enable the business to focus on portfolio performance and deliver maximum results/returns. This person will be seen as the Big Data Champion within the area and will lead the existing Java Devs on the new platform development.  

The ideal candidate for this role will have strong analytical skills with proven ability to manage a diverse client and stakeholder relationship. You’ll have proven ability delivering front office systems/tools, with an in-depth understanding of the DevOps development practices.
Your technical proficiencies will include:

  • experience with Big Data technologies (Hadoop, NoSQL, Data Lakes) is essential
  • Knowledge of Python
  • strong proficiency with object-oriented programming languages such as Java or Scala
  • experience developing Service Oriented Architectures (SOA)
  • solid experience in cloud-based development
  • experience with JavaScript frameworks, such as AngularJs, JQuery or Knockout.
